Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Conference USA is pretty wide open this season in terms of who will finish in second place behind the Memphis Tigers.  Of the candidates, the Marshall Thundering Herd enter the season with the most talent.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

As expected, the Memphis Tigers went through their share of growing pains last season with a very young, but extremely talented roster.  After dominating Conference USA from 2006-2009 in which they only lost one league game, their reign of terror in the conference has hit a bump in the road the past two seasons.  Expect a new era of supremacy to begin this season for Josh Pastner and company.

Josh Pastner

Under first year head coach Josh Pastner, the Memphis Tigers’ reign of dominance in Conference USA came to an end as they lost a league game for the first time in more than three seasons.  With one of the best recruiting classes in the country, Memphis should re-establish their control of the conference and once again be a major factor on the national scene.

99 in 99: #67 UTEP Miners

UTEP basketball

UTEP reminded us in 2009-2010 that there are more teams than just Memphis in Conference USA.  The Miners became the first non-Tiger team to capture the conference crown in five years and also snapped Memphis’ 64-game league win streak.  A repeat performance this year might be asking for too much though.
