#67 Southern Miss Golden Eagles: College Football 77 in 77

Brett Favre Southern Mississippi

Southern Miss did something last year no one else in college football could do- beat Houston and Case Keenum. Although it ended up being more of a morale boost than anything else (despite a school record 12 wins they still ended up in the Hawaii Bowl), the Conference USA Championship game win was still very impressive, as it shut out UH from any remote chance of the BCS.

Such are the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, who are becoming one of the more important college football programs in C-USA. They are the alma mater of Brett Favre after all.

Notre Dame getting a lot of preseason accolades again

manti-te'o

As usual, there’s a lot of hype and anticipation heading into next college football season regarding Notre Dame. It’s not like last season where gridiron experts are projecting them into a BCS bowl, instead it’s more about their schedule (how tough it is) and how NFL ready some of their talent is.

Especially keep an eye on linebacker Manti Te’o and tight end Tyler Eifert. And circle the dates with USC and Oklahoma.

Athlon’s college football annual will hit newsstands soon and Te’o will be on the cover of the national edition. Here are some of the many other mentions where ND gets national love from Athlon:

Michigan’s Brady Hoke Wins National Coach of the Year

brady_hoke

When the college football season started, University of Michigan Head Coach Brady Hoke made some very arrogant comments at Big Ten media day. He said “we’re not rebuilding,” and “we’re Michigan” a few times. He proved right, and us media types wrong as he was selected as the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year for the 2011 season.

Hoke wasn’t the Wolverines first choice, or even the second or third, but the “Michigan Man” was named the 19th head coach in University of Michigan football history on Jan. 11, 2011.

LSU Honey Badger Video, App, Song Drinking Game

honey_badger

Watching the college football national title game Monday night, you might have noticed that Brent Musburger referred to LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu as “the Honey Badger” as much as possible.

And when I say “you might have noticed” I actually mean it was painfully obvious to anyone who watched even a nanosecond of the game. Was he trying to be hip? Did he not know the player’s actual name? Does he just love the nickname? Was he trying to kill by alcohol poisoning the people playing the “Musburger says Honey Badger” drinking game?

Or has a generation of mindless acronyms instead of original nicknames (A-Rod, D-Will, I-Rod etc.) made us all go bucknuts when we hear an actual nickname for an athlete?

Watch two Honey Badger videos after the jump. Both narrators are men with extremely homosexual sounding voices by the way.

For more on the actual player, and the story of how he got his nickname go here

Beware LSU Honey Badger Tyrann Mathieu, Physically and Psychologically

tyrann-mathieu

Funny thing about tonight’s college football national title game, the biggest star on one side, LSU, their Heisman Trophy finalist is actually a cornerback: Tyrann Mathieu.

Another funny thing about the game, he’s trying to get a psychological edge by looking up the names of mothers of Alabama football players for some trash talking on the field.

BCS Title Game #1 LSU vs. #2 Alabama: Brutally Honest Preview

2012-bcs-championship-game

You may wonder why this preview is going up 5 days in advance of the big heavyweight bout. We’re at the point where every bowl game except the big one, the one that really matters, has been played.  Yes, the Cotton Bowl between Arkansas and Kansas State should be a fun one to watch. Much closer to being a true BCS bowl than tonight’s Orange Bowl between the so-called “best teams” from the ACC and Big East.

When talking ACC and especially Big East football, “airquotes” are often required. The ACC is 2-12 all-time in BCS bowls and the Big East simply needs to be stripped of their AQ. There’s no other way- West Virginia this year and UConn last year tell us that BE football is simply not allowed to have nice things.

And yes, there’s a couple other bowls left I didn’t mention that that you haven’t heard of, featuring teams that NO ONE cares about and NO ONE will watch.

So if the Cotton Bowl is a dud…well, let’s just get to the rematch, and this one is for all the Mardi Gras beads.

LSU’s Morris Claiborne Should be a Top 5 NFL Draft Pick

morris-claiborne

LSU is certainly becoming CBU these days. Louisiana State University is Corner Back U. Patrick Peterson left Baton Rouge early to become a two-phase NFL star with the Arizona Cardinals, and the Tigers didn’t miss a beat.

Morris Claiborne is looking like a top 5 NFL draft pick this year, and the Honey Badger Tyrann Mathieu will be a franchise player in a couple years.

#1 LSU Tigers vs. #2 Alabama Crimson Tide: BRUTALLY HONEST Game Preview

Simply put, if you’re not excited about this game, then you really are with the terrorists.

Maybe not, I think even the Al Qaeda cells in Jalalabad and Tora Bora will tune in for #1 LSU Tigers vs. #2 Alabama Crimson Tide. This is why college football has the best regular season in all of sports, you have an in-season de facto national title game.

Over 600 media credentials have been issued for this weekend, extremely high yes, but more than 800 were issued in 1993 at the Notre Dame vs. Florida State #1 vs. #2 game in South Bend. Irish head coach Lou Holtz invited all of them to his home for a BBQ dinner the Thursday before.

Will Nick Saban do the same?

#2 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Tennessee Volunteers: Brutally Honest Game Preview

You can argue that any of these three teams (LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners and Alabama Crimson Tide) are the true kings of college football. Each of them have a legit case to be #1. The Oklahoma State Cowboys, Wisconsin Badgers and Boise State Broncos belong in the discussion too. Don’t forget about the Stanford Cardinal either.

My choice in the preseason remains the same today- ‘Bama. They have the most pure talent of anyone, and that is an NFL defense they have. The Tide could probably do a much better job than the New England Patriots in opponents pass yards per game. You could just say I have a man-crush on this entire team.

If that’s possible. I think it is.

Mizzou Inevitably Joining SEC? Missouri Official Denies NY Times Report

mizzou cheerleaders

The University of Missouri has publicly stated it’s intentions of joining up with the SEC. And in many ways (adding the St. Louis and Kansas City television markets, developing natural rivalries or “border wars” with the state institutions of Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee) the Missouri Tigers are a good for the SEC.

But are they going to get enough SEC presidents to vote in favor of taking them? They currently seem one vote short.

(Update: The New York Times is reporting Missouri’s decision to officially apply for membership in the Southeastern Conference is “inevitable and imminent.“)

(Further Update: FOX 4 spoke to an university official speaking on behalf of Chancellor Brady Deaton on Monday, and they say that the report isn’t true. According to the official, there is no indication that the Board of Curators will discuss conference realignment, let alone make a decision on the matter.)

Big 12 Trying to Avoid Dissolution by Potentially Adding TCU

TCU_cheerleaders

Today, Big 12 Conference brass cleared the way to potentially add TCU, a maneuver that could honestly save a league that seemed ready to collapse a few weeks ago. The Big 12 fired commissioner Dan Beebe a couple weeks ago, the first step in trying to rehab the league. Instead of just dissolving, the move would counter-act the rumor that Mizzou is jumping to the SEC.

Although TCU is not meeting expectations this season, they’re still a program on the rise which has more than out-grown it’s mid-major status.
