When it comes to college basketball, the state of Ohio is the anti-Illinois. There may be no Midwest swing in the region’s most populous state this year (the Land of Lincoln) but there’s plenty in the Buckeye state.

The birthplace of aviation has seen their teams soar in the NCAA Tournament this year, as they went 8-0 on the first weekend. They comprise one fourth of the sweet sixteen: the Ohio Bobcats, Cincinnati Bearcats, Xavier Musketeers and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Cincinnati Bearcats basketball now trending worldwide

Yancy Gates and Mick Cronin are now both among the top ten trending terms on Twitter in the United States. And you’re probably wondering who they are.

As are many people in the world, because the Cincinnati Bearcats star player, and head coach are now picking up the steam all over the world wide web. Today, southern Ohio, tomorrow the globe.

The Bearcats ticket to the dance had already been punched, but this huge win over the Syracuse Orange 71-68, quite possibly the tourney’s #2 overall seed, just solidifies their seeding and placement further.

Back to the Q rating, you may have heard of Gates, but for an infamous reason.

DePaul’s 1st Big East Win…Will not be over Cincinnati

Given the numerous factors in the Blue Demons’ favor:

1.) How tough DePaul looked at #15 Louisville on Saturday, losing by just two baskets

2.) How bad Cincinnati looked at Pittsburgh the very same day

3.) All the internal college basketball drama the Bearcats have going on with star forward Yancy Gates, who was suspended in that Pitt game.

4.) The law of averages favor DePaul winning a conference game very soon

it was reasonable to expect All State Arena’s home team to triumph over Cincy Tuesday night. But alas, it was not to be.

The Bearcats led the entire way, enjoying a “touchdown” lead for much of the first half before extending the lead to 15 before halftime. And they never looked back, winning in Rosemont by the final of 71-68.

If ever there was a time for Cincinnati to separate themselves from the middle of the pack in the Big East, it was last season.  They had a talented, deep roster with an impact freshman Lance Stepehenson ready to help them get over the hump.  Instead, the Bearcats were a hot mess and finished with a non-winning record like they had the previous four years since switching conferences.
