Notre Dame RB Cierre Wood entering NFL Draft

cierre-wood

Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood announced today he will forgo his final season of athletic eligibility and enter the 2013 NFL Draft. Wood leaves Notre Dame as the seventh-leading rusher in school history, having gained 2,447 yards on 450 career carries. No running back in Notre Dame history with as many career rushes as Wood has a better yards-per-rush average as his 5.4 yards-per-carry average.

His departure, along with the graduation of Theo Riddick, means the bulk of the carries will likely go to George Atkinson III or that stud freshman tailback, the #2 recruit at his position coming in. With no stud running back prospects in this class, and no sure fire first rounders at the position, it’s anyone’s guess where he ends up. Maybe rounds 2-4?

Notre Dame’s Cierre Wood, Michael Floyd Put Up Big Numbers in Losses

This college football preseason some publications had Notre Dame as a top ten team, contending for a BCS bowl. This week, they enter a tough match-up with the #16 Michigan State Spartans sporting a surprising 0-2 record, meaning it’s going to take an extremely unlikely running of the table (with a top ten team in Stanford still left on the schedule) to fulfill those expectations.

But don’t blame the Irish weapons on offense for the awful start. Tailback Cierre Wood ran for over a C-note in both games (versus USF, he became the first Irish runner to top 100 yards since Armando Allen in 2009) and he finished with 134 yards and a TD in the loss to Michigan.

Back up Jonas Gray also had a big day in Ann Arbor. As Coach Brian Kelly said post game, it was Gray’s best game of his career thus far.

“It’s only getting started, we’re still working things out right now, but that’s something we wanted to build on and we finally have that now,” Wood said in the loss.

“So we’re going to work on improving our run game even more.”

#16 Notre Dame Loses Long and Bizarre Opener to South Florida

Murphy’s law is an epigram typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” And it pretty much summed up the season opener for the #16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, as they dropped a 23-20 decision to the South Florida Bulls. USF came in ten point underdogs, despite being a Big East conference favorite by many college football experts.

I guess it’s fitting that a law with an Irish name was in effect for a team nicknamed the Irish. Here are just a few things that went wrong for ND: they turned it over three times inside the USF five yard line; finished the game -5 in turnover differential, had -2 punt return yards, entered the red zone six times, but scored just twice, their kicker who had a perfect season last fall missed a chip shot field goal, and the loss came despite perfectly doubling their opponent yardage (508-254).

However, in spite of all that; the weather was the real story.

Notre Dame Running Game in 2011: What can be expected from Cierre Wood?

If there was one weak link in Notre Dame last season, it was without question the ground game. If you look at the national rankings, on offense: 67th in scoring, 92nd in rushing, 34th in passing, 61st in total yardage.

Defense: 23rd in scoring , 50th in rushing, 54th in passing, 50th in total yards. 2010 was also the first year since 1971 that the Fighting Irish failed to produce a 100 yard rusher in any single game. And the fourth consecutive year without a 1,000 rusher.

Redshirt sophomore Cierre Wood hopes to change all that. He took over the job in week 6 when Armando Allen suffered a career ending injury. It was a tough way for Allen to go out. He was an underrated back. He’s on more all-time ND record lists than you would believe, and his place on those lists is much higher than you’d expect.

Wood filled in quite admirably though, posting over 600 yards on 5.1 ypc.

Notre Dame Spring Game Observations/Summary

notre-dame_cheerleaders

The South Bend, Indiana weather didn’t exactly cooperate with Notre Dame today. Wind, rain and cold greeted the 82nd-Annual Blue-Gold Game, won by the Gold 17-14. The spring college football intra-squad game was broadcast live nationally on Versus.

It drew 27,863 to Notre Dame Stadium. Not bad for the abysmal weather conditions. ND typically draws at least 20,000 and this wasn’t too far off from cracking the top five crowds in blue-game history.

Here are some of the on-the-field highlights:
