2011 NBA Off-Season Winners

It was a shortened 2011 NBA off-season and certainly lacked the excitement and drama of the summer of 2010.  Still, some teams made major moves that will help their franchises for the immediate season and the future.  Here my NBA off-season winners which include both teams involved in the Chris Paul trade and an emerging sleeper team in the Eastern Conference.

L.A. Clippers Trade for Chris Paul; Roll the Dice on Future

chris paul clippers

As I suggested in this article back in May, the Los Angeles Clippers seemed to be a realistic trade partner for the New Orleans Hornets and Chris Paul.  After a week of rumors and vetoed trade proposals by David Stern, CP3 has finally been dealt to the Clips for three players headlined by Eric Gordon along with a first round pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.  It is a risky deal for L.A. who somewhat mortgages their future with the hope that Paul will stick with the Clippers and not leave via free agency in the summer.

Chris Paul Traded to L.A. Clippers for Gordon, Kaman, Aminu and Draft Pick

Chris-Paul

The NBA has reached an agreement, in principle, to end the Chris Paul drama. Just ten days and change to the start of the season and CP3 didn’t even know what team he was going to be on. Yes, the Los Angeles Clippers will get to keep Blake Griffin, and still have one of the best point guards in the league.

According to the sources of Yahoo! Sports:

The league-owned New Orleans Hornets will receive guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ unprotected 2012 first-round pick in return for Paul.

As part of the deal, Paul has agreed to not opt out of his contract after this season – allowing the Clippers to keep him at least through the 2012-13 season.

No Matter the Result on Ryan Braun, ESPN Needs to Focus on Reporting

There is no doubt that ESPN has become the #1 outlet for sports news in the world. With their coverage in over 200 countries and across multiple forms of media on a 24/7 timescale, they have become the all-knowing power when it comes to sports or we thought so.

Over the last couple of weeks, the “Worldwide Leader in Sports,” has published a few stories that questions whether they truly have a neutral standpoint. In what I like to call the twitter-age, it’s all about being first to the story and ESPN is full-heartedly playing in to that notion, even if they don’t have all of the facts.

By not reporting all of the facts, ESPN is jumping to conclusions and in essence fabricating how we perceive the world of sports.

A good friend said it best, we want ESPN to report our sporting news, not make it. [Read more…]

How Clippers Could Get Chris Paul AND Dwight Howard

The following is a result of me being bored at 2:30 a.m. and playing around on ESPN’s Trade MachineBill Simmons may be the Picasso of the Trade Machine, but I am the Michaelangelo.  Before you light me up in the comment box below, let me just clarify: I am not saying this trade idea will happen, should happen, or ever could happen, but it at least got me thinking, “Hmmmm…”

In the new-found era of super-teams in the NBA, I cannot help but think that the next duo of players to follow the Miami Heat, LeBron/Wade/Bosh blueprint and join forces for one franchise will be Chris Paul and Dwight Howard who both could become free agents in the summer of 2012.  Here is a crazy, wild, insane, probably never going to happen brainstorm; what if the Los Angeles Clippers made a push to acquire CP3 and Howard, and team them up with Blake Griffin to form a megapower?

Hornets Must Find Way to Win, Keep Chris Paul Happy

Chris Paul Hornets

There is a new regime in charge of the New Orleans Hornets.  They hired a new head coach in Monty Williams and a new general manager in Dell Demps with the hopes of putting the franchise back on the winning track.  In order to successfully do that, they must keep Chris Paul happy and show him that the team is truly willing to surround him with pieces needed to win a championship.  If not, CP3 could soon be leaving the Big Easy.

Chris Paul Trade Possibilities

Chris Paul trade

Chris Paul is reportedly unhappy and wants out of New Orleans. The face of the Hornets apparently does not think the franchise has made the necessary moves to surround him with the talent needed to make a run at an NBA title and will sit down with management Monday to discuss his future. The end result could involve CP3 demanding a trade out of the bayou in hopes of pulling a LeBron James and aligning himself with another top tier player.

Rumored wish lists have begun to surface about where Paul would like to end up if the trigger is in fact pulled on a trade. New York and Orlando seem to his preferred destinations with Dallas and Portland also being discussed. Allow me to put my trade machine expertise to work and throw out some potential deals like Ron Burgundy throwing out sexual advances at Veronica Corningstone.

(Note: In no way I am supporting any of these trades or saying the Hornets would or should make these deals. They are clearly possible offers that would benefit all parties involved. So don’t leave a comment claiming I am an idiot for proposing these deals. Thank you.)
