2020 Chicago Fire FC Season Preview, Key Home Games

So what’s new for the Chicago Fire FC in 2020? It’s probably shorter to just list out what ISN’T new for #cf97 this upcoming season, as you can literally start counting down the hours now until the new Major League Soccer season begins. Yes, there is snow and ice on the ground, with single digit wind chills expected tonight, but the Fire begin the regular season, at the Seattle Sounders on Sunday (kickoff is 2 pm local).

With a new: logo, color scheme, team name (sort of),owner, home stadium, manager, football director, broadcast partners (not to mention a totally revamped roster), a different era is underway to say the least, so let’s just dive right in and vivisect it all.  The club revealed their second kit, which it white today:

Nicolas Gaitan to Join Bastian Schweinsteiger, Dax McCarty in Chicago Fire Midfield

When the Chicago Fire open their season on Sunday against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the L.A. Galaxy they will do so with a new player added to the roster. Thursday saw Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang announce the transfer of Nicolas Gaitan to the Major League Soccer side.

“Nicholas Gaitan joined the US Fireworks Chicago Fire Team. The club expressed its heartfelt gratitude to Gaitan for his contribution to the team during the Dalian period,” the post on the official Dalian website reads.

Dax McCarty, Nemanja Nikolic, Veljko Paunovic, Nelson Rodriguez on New Chicago Fire Signings

Tuesday night brought the first major event of 2019 for the Chicago Fire as the team hosted a kit launch and Motorola branding event at Fire on the Mile in the Wrigley Building. It was also the first media availability of ’19, and with that we saw the most prominent figures in the club take questions from reporters about how the offseason has gone thus far.

The Fire have made two major acquisitions thus far: Przemyslaw Frankowski, a midfielder and Polish international from
Gdansk, who last played for Jagiellonia Bialystok and central defender Marcelo dos Santos Ferreira, commonly referred to as Marcelo, who arrived via transfer from Portuguese first-division club Sporting CP.

Bastian Schweinsteiger to Fill Positional Holes for Chicago Fire in 2019

Bastian Schweinsteiger is back for a third season with the Chicago Fire in 2019, and the position he’ll play this year is…wherever he’s needed. Obviously, he’s a natural and preferred #6, and thus his best place is in the defensive midfield, but last season he played as a central defender on many occasions, filling the team’s talent and depth gap at the position.

According to Schweinsteiger himself, in this interview he just did with ESPN at Major League Soccer Media Day (video below), he played the final eight games of the 2018 season at centre-back. Schweinsteiger also said he believes central defense is where he can most help the team out right now.
