Cubs Give 3-Yr $20 Million Extension to Carlos Marmol

The Chicago Cubs and right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol have agreed to terms on a three-year, $20 million contract. The deal covers Marmol’s final two seasons of arbitration eligibility and his first year of free agency.

Marmol, 28, last season set a franchise record with 138 strikeouts as a reliever and recorded 38 saves in his first full season as the club’s closer, fourth-most in the National League. His 15.99 strikeouts per 9.0 innings marked the highest total for a reliever in major league history, surpassing Eric Gagne’s 14.98 mark in 2003 by more than a full strikeout. The 138 strikeouts were the 10th most in a single season by any reliever in major league history.
