Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The Drexel Dragons lose just one player from last year’s team that picked up 29 victories and won the CAA regular season title.  They missed out on the NCAA Tournament though and are hoping to right that wrong this time around.

Though they missed out on the NCAA Tournament, Paul Hewitt picked up right where Jim Larranaga left off, leading the George Mason Patriots to their fourth twenty win season in the past years.  With VCU leaving the CAA, GMU figures to be back competing for another conference crown.

In the ever evolving landscape of college athletics, the Old Dominion Monarchs enter their final year as members of the Colonial Athletic Association.  ODU will move to Conference USA next season and should once again be in the title picture in their swan song year in the CAA.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

I didn’t intentionally put three Colonial Athletic Association teams back-to-back-to-back in my  rankings.  George Mason was just knocked down several spots due to the suspension of senior point guard Andre Cornelius.  Now, the CAA figures to be a tightly contested conference with George Mason, Old Dominion, and VCU all in play to win the league title with Drexel as a potential sleeper.

Blaine Taylor has built the Old Dominion Monarchs into highly competitive mid-major program.  ODU has made the NCAA Tournament four of the past seven seasons and have a .750 winning percentage in the Colonial Athletic Association during that span.  The Monarchs do lose four starters from last year but should still be a threat to win the CAA and head back to the Big Dance.

After their Cinderella run to the Final Four last season, part of me has a really hard time ranking the VCU Rams this low.  They seem ready to emerge as a yearly, dangerous mid-major team as long as Shaka Smart is running the show.  However, with four starters gone from last year, VCU has to replace a lot of experience.
