Jimmer Fredette signs with the Chicago Bulls

jimmer-fredette-si

Jimmer Fredette won the 2010-11 Oscar Robertson Trophy, annually presented to the National Player of the Year in college basketball. Drafted by the Sacramento Kings, he never quite fit in there. Jimmer is an undersized shooting guard who doesn’t have the skill set to play the one. The Kings released him, and now the Chicago Bulls have signed him.

Both the Chicago Tribune and USA Today are mong the multiple sources reporting this. Fredette has cleared waivers and he is en route to joining the team.

#50 BYU Cougars: College Basketball 111 in 111

byu cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

As expected, the BYU Cougars’ transition to the West Coast Conference was smooth as they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a sixth straight season.  Steady goes the course for Dave Rose as he should have BYU competing for another trip to the dance.

Last year was the first season of independence for the BYU Cougars; who responded by going 10-3 and winning a bowl game. They also had the 13th ranked defense nationally, to complement their usual vaunted air attack. What can Bronco Mendenhall do for an encore? Well the schedule gets increasingly tougher this year, but maybe a full season of Riley Nelson under center will make a difference?

Jimmer, Steve Young Star in Funny BYU Cougars Video

jimmer byu

The video that follows after the jump includes an all-star team of BYU legends: Steve Young, Jimmer Fredette, Lavell Edwards etc talking about being a real cougar; becoming a real cougar. On one level the video is cutesy innocent funny- in the way they utilized the CGI cougar.

But another, more sexually depraved level this video is very funny. Because if you search for the word “cougar” these days, in any search medium, the first few entries you’ll find are related to the cougar of Demi Moore variety.

Or low-rent wannabe versions of Demi Moore.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Jimmer Time was a fun ride for all of college basketball last season.  2011-2012 will be a year of transition though for the BYU Cougars as they must replace their All-American guard and also make the switch from the Mountain West to the West Coast Conference.

If I could paraphrase Destiny’s Child circa 2001, “all the programs who INDEPENDENT, throw your hands up at me. All the A.D.s making money throw your hands up at me.” Or perhaps you recall Bill Pullman’s very rousing “Today, is our independence day!” speech from the 1996 blockbuster film.

That’s the spirit in Provo, Utah right now. They got a sweetheart TV deal from ESPN, and centralized their broadcasting rights back to the LDS Church. And that’s exactly why they could leave the MWC to go independent in the first place- their worldwide Mormon audience is a built-in fan base. (Mendenhall has said so himself) Exactly like Notre Dame and the Catholics.

Their independent schedule is pretty tough in the early going, whoops I almost said “non-conference” there. But they finished strong last year and have lots to build on. [Read more…]

Jimmer Fredette Gets Candid, Increases NBA Draft Stock (Video)

jimmer fredette girlfriend

Jimmer Fredette was the National Player of the Year in college basketball. Jimmer’s amazing season inspired “Jimmermania” which in turn led to the usage of the term Jimmer as a verb and a metaphor for greatness.

He also inspired the greatest Sports Illustrated cover ever. And then his team was eliminated in the very next game, once again giving more credibility to the “SI Cover Jinx” idea.

Greatest Jimmer Fredette Photograph/Magazine Cover Ever

I guess this means the BYU Cougars will be eliminated in a few hours at the hands of the Florida Gators. That is if you believe in the Sports Illustrated cover jinx. Isn’t this the greatest college basketball picture ever? If you need to sum up “Jimmer-mania” in one piece this is it. Jimmer Fredette at work, doing his thing.

He appears to be flying, the ball fits perfectly into the o in the word sports.

Butler has done it again; knocking off Pitt in the third round of the NCAA Tournament featuring a crazy ending with two somewhat controversial foul calls in the final seconds.  Now the Bulldogs are in the Sweet 16 of the Southeast Regional along with Wisconsin, Florida, and Jimmer Fredette’s BYU Cougars.  Here is the breakdown of Thursday night’s games and who I think will be heading to the Final Four.

Jimmer-Mania Hits New Orleans NCAA Regional: BYU vs. Florida Preview

jimmer fredette

He started out as an unknown his freshman and sophomore year. People began to recognize his name after a clutch performance in the NCAA first round last season and now he’s the hottest topic in college basketball.

Jimmer Fredette, the 6’2″ shooting guard for Brigham Young University, has wowed the crowds all year long with his 30-foot three pointers and night in, night out he makes plays that leave opposing players shaking their heads in disbelief.

Now, he leads BYU into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1981 where they will meet the Florida Gators, a team they defeated last year in a classic first round double overtime contest.

2011 March Madness Predictions

bracket

It’s crunch time. The tournament is less than 24 hours away. By now you have gone through a dozen brackets, second guessing each pick. You want to choose the upset that no one is talking about, but your sleeper is becoming everyone’s sleeper. We see it every year; an upset pick that becomes so popular that it is no longer an upset, i.e. Richmond over Vanderbilt this year. At last, I’m here to give you six picks that no one is talking about, but should be, heading into the 2011 NCAA tournament.
