Is Derrick Rose the Next Deron Williams?

With the signing of three former members of the Utah Jazz, the Chicago Bulls earned the nickname “Utah Midwest” this summer. Bulls fans hope they don’t become “Utah Jazz East,” as in the Jazz of the Eastern Conference postseason because Utah’s recent playoff experience is not worth emulating.

You’ve heard the expression “NBA Hell?” Well, that’s exactly where Utah is- a place where the ceiling has been reached and every May just repeats itself like the movie “Groundhog Day.”

One aspect of the Jazz certainly worth emulating is the play of their point guard. In recent years, we’ve seen University of Illinois product Deron Williams evolve into the greatest ex-Illini in the professional ranks, and later the greatest overall point guard.

Can Derrick Rose make a similar leap? A couple of Williams’ former teammates believe so.

Chicago Bulls Media Day Musings, Memories and Miami Heat Talk

Remember how you felt the first day back at school each fall? The summer was over and “it’s business time again. Only this time, the real business was the summer itself. It seemed like the shortest NBA off-season in history, simply because it was the most exciting one that we could ever have.

Cherish it, we’ll never see a July like that again. The Chicago Bulls were a major player in that offseason, and although they failed to land any of the primary prizes available, they still made some huge improvements on last year’s team.

And even if they hadn’t nabbed Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, Ronnie Brewer etc. you couldn’t fault them for first liquidating their assets and “backing up the truck” to buy. Because you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. The Bulls were indeed among the most active deal-makers on the trading floor when the exchange opened for business July 1.

They didn’t acquire the blue-chippers, but they certainly augmented their portfolio of holdings.

Bulls add Ronnie Brewer, 3 yrs $12.5 Million

The same day that the Chicago Bulls officially lost out on J.J. Redick, the team added a very talented wing in Ronnie Brewer. In fact, he might be the most athletic wing the team has had in quite some time; an no doubt an upgrade over Redick. This move is no consolation prize; it fills a big hole and brings in a guy point guards love to play with. The best point guard in the league, Deron Williams, was really upset when Brewer was dealt out of Utah.

So Brewer should gel well with Bulls franchise point guard Derrick Rose. This move also brings the number of ex-Jazz players coming to Chicago this summer to three. I guess you can call the Bulls “Utah Midwest” now; but with a much smaller Mormon population. I do hope that Brewer, along with Boozer and Korver, aren’t shocked by how flat it is here. And they realize that upgrading from tiny market to huge market (in this case anyway) means you’ll have fewer options when it comes to ski vacations.
