Braxton Miller could have Antwaan Randle El type NFL career

braxton-miller

When Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller switched positions, many media members portrayed the decision as a selfless act by an individual placing team needs above his own. That’s a half-truth. Miller has no NFL future as a QB. He does have a lot of pro potential as a wide receiver though. So the situation is actually a win-win for Braxton Miller, for both his individual, and his team goals.

Take the case of former Indiana quarterback Antwaan Randle El? Like Miller, he wasn’t tall enough to play quarterback in the NFL, so Randle El moved to receiver where he had a very fine pro career. He especially excelled on special teams. Braxton Miller is dynamic like Randle El, but he has more size.

Ohio State CB Bradley Roby will possibly be suspended

Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby will have a short leash according to Urban Meyer. And a suspension is likely. Roby, a junior who was an afterthought recruit from the same high school as former Buckeyes DL Cameron Heyward, was arrested in Bloomington, Indiana on July 21st and faces preliminary charges of battery resulting in bodily injury.

He was “asked to leave the bar after a disturbance, refused, and was subdued by bouncers at the bar before being taken into custody.”

Ohio State: Evil Empire of the Big Ten Tournament

ohio-state

It’s official, with a 50-43 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten title game, the Ohio State University has now become the Evil Empire of the Big Ten Tourney. I’ve been covering the Big Ten Tournament for four years, and Ohio State has been in the tourney final game each time. Actually, they’ve gone to 5 straight title games and 8 overall. The tournament has only been in existence since 1998. Ohio State head coach That Matta has the Big Ten Tournament’s highest winning percentage and second most wins behind Tom Izzo of Michigan State.

In other words, they’re the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers, Notre Dame, Duke Blue Devils of the BTT. They’ve become the “anyone but them” team for fans of other Big Ten teams. Which is a huge compliment. You have to be very successful to be hated. You have to be highly relevant in order to generate a backlash.

If you’ve been to a Big Ten Tournament recently, then the Ohio State marching band’s “Battle Cry” and “Hang on Sloopy” have become as overplayed as “Gangnam Style” and “Harlem Shake.”

2012 Ohio State Buckeyes football: first two deep roster

osu-hotty

The first official two-deep chart of the Urban Meyer coaching era at Ohio State was revealed today as Meyer presented it to a room of more than 40 reporters covering the news at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center.

With 18 starters returning from last season including both kickers, there are plenty of familiar names on the two-deep chart, including fourth-year starting fullback Zach Boren and three-year starters Jake Stoneburner (tight end), John Simon (defensive line) and C.J. Barnett (safety).

Ohio State’s Aaron Craft: Best Distributor in College Basketball?

aaron_craft

I believe the best compliment you can ever give a point guard is “excellent distributor.” I asked Ohio State “1” Aaron Craft what he thought of the term at Big Ten media day.

“I’ll take any kind words I can get,” he responded.

Craft has had the benefit of playing with a marquee player in Jared Sullinger; giving him a strong force to work the ball inside to.

“Playing with a guy like Jared, and a guy like Evan Turner (NBA overall #2 pick in 2010) in the summer, makes us better. It’s a lot more fun and you always now what you’re going to get.

Ohio St.’s Jared Sullinger: NBA “star calls” in college

jared sullinger nba draft

In today’s media world, never overlook the power of the “retweet,” or the “RT.” It’s today’s online journalistic currency because it serves as a cosign statement or endorsement of what you just tweeted.

And I get my highest number of RTs whenever I tweet things like:

“BREAKING NEWS: Jared Sullinger gets away with changing his pivot foot.”

Or

“BREAKING UPDATE: Jared Sullinger to receive numerous favorable calls tonight.”

Or

THIS JUST IN: a questionable call/non-call goes Jared Sullinger’s way.

The fact that these tweets are so popular proves I’ve tapped into a populist sentiment. Ohio State star forward Jared Sullinger gets A LOT of favorable calls, and many people out there agree with me.

Ohio State just too big and strong for Northwestern: 75-73

jared-sullinger-nba-draft

Ohio State came in 33-2 and winners of 13 straight versus Northwestern when nationally ranked. So you had to like the chances of the nation’s #10 team in Evanston. When you saw them make their first six shots and jump out to a 69% to 35% field goal average (nearly double) about halfway through the first half, I’m sure you liked their chances even more.

Give Northwestern (17-12, 7-10) credit though, they did keep fighting, and they fought hard to nearly force overtime in the final seconds.

Wisconsin Badgers pick up signature win at Ohio State (Rapid Reaction)

After 29 games, the Wisconsin Badgers have finally picked up that signature win they were looking for.

Better late than never as Jordan Taylor and Jared Berggren’s combined 37 points helped the Badgers upset the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 63-60.

With the loss, the Michigan State Spartans clinch at least a share of the Big Ten Title and Ohio State’s (23-6, 11-5) chances at a number one seed are now dashed. Meanwhile, the Badgers (21-8, 10-6) have most certainly enhanced their resume for the big dance.

“We’ve played two very good teams. Today, we needed to have the ability to sustain what we had going, which we didn’t do. We didn’t get the execution or the defensive stops that we needed,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of the loss.

Need a Football Fix? Brutally Honest Preview Greatest Hits

ohio-state_michigan

No one cares about the Pro Bowl. And the NHL All-Star game is too obscure to even rip on.

So what will you do on this football-less weekend?

Well, I have some ideas from when Nike was gracious enough to set me up for the 2010 Football Media Summit at Dallas Cowboys Stadium. I met a lot of football writers who told me about their…well if they were comedians, their “bits.” The signature segment if you will.

With this site, it’s clearly the mock drafts. Sure, the picture galleries of swimsuit models/cheerleaders/pagaent winners turned sideline reporters gets more traffic. As do the photo galleries of the most aesthetically pleasing female athletes out there.

But our mocks are #1.

Ohio State Keeps Fickell, Vrabel on Staff, Add Defensive Coordinator

Luke Fickell

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer added another staff member today: Everett Withers, the current interim head coach at the University of North Carolina.

Withers has been a collegiate coach for 17 years and has also worked seven seasons in the National Football League: six years (2001-06) as defensive backs coach with the Tennessee Titans under Jeff Fisher, and a year (1994) as a defensive quality control coach for the New Orleans Saints. In Columbus, he’ll serve as co-defensive coordinator with this year’s interim Head Coach Luke Fickell.
