Ohio State’s Aaron Craft: Best Distributor in College Basketball?

aaron_craft

I believe the best compliment you can ever give a point guard is “excellent distributor.” I asked Ohio State “1” Aaron Craft what he thought of the term at Big Ten media day.

“I’ll take any kind words I can get,” he responded.

Craft has had the benefit of playing with a marquee player in Jared Sullinger; giving him a strong force to work the ball inside to.

“Playing with a guy like Jared, and a guy like Evan Turner (NBA overall #2 pick in 2010) in the summer, makes us better. It’s a lot more fun and you always now what you’re going to get.

Let’s break it down!

Ohio State needs to play more than just 6 or 7 guys

thad matta ohio state

In 2010, Ohio State won the Big Ten, the Big Ten Tournament and had a #2 seedin the NCAA Tournament. They were loaded with talent yet they only played 6-7 guys regularly, and were overly reliant on National Player of the Year Evan Turner.

They were upset by Tennessee in the sweet sixteen.

Last year, the Buckeyes were the tournament’s #1 overall seed, again loaded and deep, yet again over-reliant on one star- this time Jared Sullinger. Again they were upset in the tournament’s second weekend, and did not make the Elite Eight.

Ohio St.’s Jared Sullinger: NBA “star calls” in college

jared sullinger nba draft

In today’s media world, never overlook the power of the “retweet,” or the “RT.” It’s today’s online journalistic currency because it serves as a cosign statement or endorsement of what you just tweeted.

And I get my highest number of RTs whenever I tweet things like:

“BREAKING NEWS: Jared Sullinger gets away with changing his pivot foot.”

Or

“BREAKING UPDATE: Jared Sullinger to receive numerous favorable calls tonight.”

Or

THIS JUST IN: a questionable call/non-call goes Jared Sullinger’s way.

The fact that these tweets are so popular proves I’ve tapped into a populist sentiment. Ohio State star forward Jared Sullinger gets A LOT of favorable calls, and many people out there agree with me.

Buckeyes, Musketeers, Bearcats, Bobcats: Ohio basketball bonanza

xavier-mascot

When it comes to college basketball, the state of Ohio is the anti-Illinois. There may be no Midwest swing in the region’s most populous state this year (the Land of Lincoln) but there’s plenty in the Buckeye state.

The birthplace of aviation has seen their teams soar in the NCAA Tournament this year, as they went 8-0 on the first weekend. They comprise one fourth of the sweet sixteen: the Ohio Bobcats, Cincinnati Bearcats, Xavier Musketeers and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Ohio State just too big and strong for Northwestern: 75-73

jared-sullinger-nba-draft

Ohio State came in 33-2 and winners of 13 straight versus Northwestern when nationally ranked. So you had to like the chances of the nation’s #10 team in Evanston. When you saw them make their first six shots and jump out to a 69% to 35% field goal average (nearly double) about halfway through the first half, I’m sure you liked their chances even more.

Give Northwestern (17-12, 7-10) credit though, they did keep fighting, and they fought hard to nearly force overtime in the final seconds.

Illini Brandon Paul Drops 43! Illinois Stuns #5 Ohio State!

brandon_paul

Illinois wing Brandon Paul was incredibly efficient tonight, becoming the 1st college basketball player in the last 15 years to score 43+ on 15 or fewer field goal attempts. It’s the third most single game points by an Illini in program history.

His heroics carried the Illini to a 79-74 victory at home over the #5 Ohio State Buckeyes.

What a special performance. There is just so much good to write here, in the second half alone, but I’ll try to keep it from becoming 600 words.

Is #2 Ohio State the Best Team in All of College Basketball?

aaron-craft

As we put the finishing touches on another season of non-conference play in college basketball, we can take stock of where a lot of programs are, and where they are not.

In the Big Ten, the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes are clearly the class of the league. Yes, Wisconsin and Michigan are also ranked and we know they can ball. The Indiana Hoosiers are way better than any of us anticipated. Illinois, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue and Northwestern could all be solid, or they could all be NIT. All of these teams have struggled putting away the scrubs, while OSU blows all their scrub opponents out of the water.

I think the Buckeyes aren’t just the best team in the conference, but also the nation. Why because now they have an Aaron Craft to complement a Jared Sullinger.

Preseason All-America Hoops Team Released; Buckeyes Sullinger Only Unanimous Choice

jared sullinger

The Big Ten conference as a whole may take a step backward this college basketball season, but their star power will remain high this hoops season. The AP All-American preseason first team was released a few short hours ago, and the league made a very tremendous impact on that very short list.

Ohio State‘s Jared Sullinger was the only unanimous choice of the 65-member national media panel. The Badgers Jordan Taylor is the only senior.

Harrison Barnes of North Carolina, Terrence Jones of Kentucky and Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut, three sophomores, round out the rest of the team.

Ohio State Pounds George Mason 98-66: NCAA 3rd Round Rapid Reaction

Not even a slow start could stop the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes from blowing out #8 George Mason 98-66 in front of essentially a home-crowd in the 3rd Round of the NCAA Tournament.

As Gus Johnson so eloquently exclaimed “Home Cookin,” because Cleveland native David Lighty was brilliant with a game-high 25 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.

Lighty wasn’t the only one stroking from deep as the Buckeyes broke an OSU NCAA Tournament record with 16 made three-pointers en route to their most lopsided tournament win in school history.

Ohio State Buckeyes Aaron Craft Maturing Before Our Eyes

On Friday, the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes experienced two things their team rarely experiences; an off-shooting performance and a close game resulting in overtime. Luckily for the Buckeyes, they were able to hold on and knock off the pesky Northwestern Wildcats by the score of 67-61 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Freshman Aaron Craft was particularly great on Friday with his hard-nosed defense and a sense of confidence which has you constantly asking how old is this kid.

Senior glue-man David Lighty summed up Craft perfectly by saying “He’s not a freshman, his play speaks for itself. He comes in and plays his role to perfection.”

#1 Ohio State Buckeyes get Serious Scare from Northwestern

shurna

Earlier this college basketball season, NU took the #1 (and then undefeated) Ohio State Buckeyes down to the final minute, and lost by just one in Evanston. And today the Wildcats had a lead on the #1 in both polls Buckeyes, but couldn’t close the deal.

A day after Northwestern senior Juice Thompson put the point in point guard (breaking the Big Ten Tournament single game points record held by Purdue Boilermakers Brian Cardinal), the Wildcats struggled substantially with their offense. Sure, part of that was the game plan, slowing tempo and limiting possessions.

But part of it was ineffective shooting; and the result was a 67-61 overtime loss. Still #1 vs. #8 games in the Big Ten Tournament are not supposed to be this close and exciting.
