Michigan State’s Branden Dawson punches Purdue’s Travis Carroll: VIDEO

Branden-Dawson

During the Michigan State Spartans utter destruction of the Purdue Boilermakers today, you might have noticed a little punch thrown by State forward Branden Dawson on Purdue’s Travis Carroll. Tom Izzo coached players do not act like this; McDonald’s All-Americans do not like act like this. Watch the video to see the act for yourself. Of course, the Spartans deny it. Deny deny deny:

Michigan State sports information director Matt Larson sent the following in an email to the BTN:

“The angle of Branden Dawson that BTN had during the broadcast certainly makes it look like there might have been a punch. However, I’ve viewed an angle from underneath the basket and that does not appear to be the case.”

Michigan State 2012 season recap, 2013 look ahead

msu-logo

As the first #1 seed to bow out of the NCAA tournament, the Michigan State Spartans can only look at all the improvements they made this season and see success.

The team finished with the number one SOS, 12 top-50 RPI wins, 16 top-100 RPI wins and 12 road/neutral wins in the nation’s top conference. They went from being unranked at the beginning of the season to earning a top seed in the post-season—if that’s not the true mark of improvement, then what is? [Read more…]

Can Michigan State be a NCAA Tournament #1 Seed?

Branden-Dawson

Watching Michigan State win decisively on national television Sunday had a distinctively March feel to it. Like a usual spring rite of passage, no doubt helped by the sound of the CBS college basketball theme song we’ve all become accustomed to. Once again, the Spartans look like a top line team on NCAA Selection Sunday.

And McDonald’s All-American Branden Dawson is helping to power them there.

The freshman dunk expert has a few creative slams in his arsenal, but his stellar dunk in the second half capped off his 15 points, 11 rebounds and two block effort against Purdue. A well-balanced green and white attack also helped Michigan State sweep their season series with the Boilermakers; Austin Thornton added a career-high 17 points, while center Derrick Nix tallied a twelve point effort. Michigan State’s senior warrior Draymond Green, posted his 33rd career double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. [Read more…]

Just How Good Are The 2012 Michigan State Spartans?

Let Saturday’s 58-48 victory over third ranked Ohio State be a wake up call to anyone who was sleeping on this year’s Michigan State team. It was understandable why this was one of Sparty’s least hyped-up teams in recent memory. After all, there was little for them to build on. They came into the season unranked after being eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year and lost three of their top four scorers, including star guard Kalin Lucas. [Read more…]

#6 Michigan State Sees Win Streak End at Northwestern!

Tom Izzo

Was this a huge upset? On one level, yes. Any time the most prominent college basketball program in the Big Ten falls to the program with the least amount of tradition in the conference, it’s huge!

Not to mention it ended the biggest win streak that prominent

On the other hand, Northwestern came in with a RPI of 28 while Michigan State’s number is 6, so it’s not that big of a spread.

Also, last year’s meetings were an OT defeat in East Lansing and a one possession final score in Evanston.

However, when Northwestern defeated Michigan State 81-74, this one seemed to look like a “season definer.”

Michigan State on Biggest Winning Streak Since Izzo’s 1st Final Four Team

tom-izzo

When the #6 Michigan State Spartans head to Northwestern on Saturday, they’ll do so riding a 15 game winning streak=longest winning streak since the 1998-99 season, when they won 22 in a row before losing to Duke in the Final Four.

That was Tom Izzo’s fourth season at the helm in East Lansing, and the first of his six Final Fours. That team lost to the Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center to open the Big Ten season, then started their phenomenal run at home versus the rival Michigan Wolverines.

This group dropped the season opening pair to the ACC traditional powers (North Carolina in the aircraft carrier game and Duke in the Coach K. milestone game) before starting the current streak that has seen them rocket from preseason after-thought to national top ten ranking.

Michigan State’s New Year’s Resolutions: Buckle Down Before Big Ten Play

christmas gift

‘Tis the season, my friends, and as 2012 approaches, a few new items may be on Tom Izzo and the Spartans’ “Wish List.” With conference play starting soon, here are a few things that Michigan State will be looking to fine-tune in time for big, bad Big Ten play.

Branden Dawson Latest Michigan State Blue Chip Recruit

michigan-state-logo

This hasn’t been an ideal college basketball season in East Lansing, Michigan. In fact, it’s been nightmarish as the Spartans find themselves barely hanging on for a NCAA Tournament berth. Their meeting with the Illini on Saturday might be a “play-out game” for the big dance. But now’s not the time for MSU gloom and doom.

Instead let’s look ahead, to next year and another solid recruiting class. The crown jewel of that class is Branden Dawson, a 6-5 wing from Gary, Indiana who prepped at Lew Wallace.

The McDonald’s All-American Dawson is a Los Angeles Lakers fan should fit in well with Draymond Green next year, as he also prefers purple and gold.

Bulls, Derrick Rose Greet Local McDonald’s All-Americans

Derrick Rose Bulls

Tonight’s NBA contest between the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Bobcats featured three Chicago-area McDonald’s All Americans debuting their official 2011 jerseys at Chicago’s famed United Center alongside 2007 McDonald’s All American and current Bulls guard, Derrick Rose.

Branden Dawson, Wayne Blackshear and Anthony Davis will join forces again at the United Center on March 30 as Boys West squad teammates during the 34th McDonald’s All American Boys Game.

It was a special night for all three local products as they took in a game at “the House that Michael Jordan Built,” on a night when Jordan himself was in attendance (along with his former running mate Scottie Pippen and former Chicago Bears Defensive end/newly crowned NFL Hall of Famer Richard Dent)
