Going Inside Big Ten Network Headquarters, Conference Expansion Rumors

Last night I was lucky enough to be at a small private reception that included Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany. Yes, I was at the same party as the most powerful man in the prestigious college basketball and college football league.

Delaney’s a University of North Carolina alum, and this was a Chicago Carolina Club gathering at Japonais, a downtown restaurant located a few floors below the Big Ten Network (BTN) studio. Yes, I infiltrated a group of Tar Heels (despite the horrors of the 2005 national title game) in order to get the story.

Before we get to the tour, we’ll go over some conference expansion rumors and innuendo. Because once you get on any topic remotely connected to this issue these days, the conversation inevitably leads there anyway.

Big Ten Realizes Division Names are Terrible, Considering Changes

After angering the entire Midwest, Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany will reconsider the division names Legends and Leaders for the Big 10 Conference. The conference was divided after it expanded to 12 teams this past summer. The division names were revealed earlier this week. But for starters, the new logo looked as if Delany made it during his free trial of Photoshop, and teams like Indiana, who has never won a Rose Bowl, is in the Legends division. Now, Delany wants to fix what was wronged by renaming the divisions.

An Unorthodox way to Form Big 10 Divisions

Big Ten Conference

As Conference Commissioner Jim Delany noted at Media Day, BIG changes are on the way in the Big Ten. There will be a conference championship game in 2011, a nine game conference schedule will be here soon, and we’ll need to split into two divisions in order to make that happen. So how will be go about forming these two divisions?
