Illini Soundly Defeat UNC in Tue Headliner of Big 10-ACC Challenge

Illinois basketball

Well how do you like that? There was an environment in the Assembly Hall tonight that is very unusual for a late November game, it felt like the good old days of the Big Ten ACC Challenge when we would routinely host top tier teams like Wake Forest or North Carolina.  The over capacity, extremely amped crowd had plenty to cheer about as the 2010 Illini attempted to exorcise the demons of the 2005 Illini.

99 in 99: #8 North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina cheerleaders

The North Carolina Tar Heels were once again playing for a championship in April.  Unfortunately, it was the NIT title.  UNC is coming off a very uncharacteristic season in which they missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time under Roy Williams.  The Heels will be a young team this season but do add the top freshman in the country, Harrison Barnes.

Lesson #1: never, ever under-estimate how good of a coach Bo Ryan is.  Regardless of how many players the Wisconsin Badgers lose in any given season, Ryan always has UW near the top of the Big Ten standings.  Expect more of the same this year.

99 in 99: #19 Purdue Boilermakers

robbie hummel

With news of Robbie Hummel’s second torn ACL in an eight-month period, the Purdue Boilermakers dropped from second in my rankings to 19th.  Is that too drastic on my part?  When you consider the strength at the top of the Big Ten with teams like Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois, and Wisconsin; I do not think so.
