#11 Syracuse Orange: College Basketball 111 in 111

syracuse-orange

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With the disappointing outcome of Friday night’s expected aircraft carrier games, the Syracuse Orange are hoping for better luck Sunday when they take on San Diego State on the deck of the USS Midway.  The game has already been postponed from its original tip date of Friday and if the conditions hold, should be the start of another season (and their last season since they move to the ACC next year) in which Jim Boeheim has ‘Cuse competing for a Big East title.

The Cincinnati Bearcats were at the epicenter of college basketball’s black eye last season when they brawled on the court with crosstown rival, Xavier.  Rather than letting that spin Cincy’s season in a downward spiral, Mick Cronin rallied his team and they grew stronger as the season progressed.  The ‘Cats should once again be in a position to make some noise since they return three of their five starters.

WARNING: As a Marquette alum and obsessive Golden Eagle basketball fan, this is going to take my lengthy, in-depth, nerdy previews to a whole new level.  If I were you, I would clear out ten minutes of your schedule before beginning to read this.

After suffering through a rare season filled with struggles, the Pitt Panthers will look to end their tenure as members of the Big East Conference with a bang.  A few key newcomers should make it easier for Jamie Dixon to return to the winning ways this program has become accustomed to seeing.

The Georgetown Hoyas lose their top three scorers from a year ago but have some talented young players who will need to step into bigger roles this season for the team to be a player in the Big East Conference.

A lack of depth really left the St. John’s Red Storm with little chance of being a factor in the Big East last season.  With Steve Lavin healthy and back on the bench, and improved depth up and down the roster, St. John’s will be a bigger factor this season.

The South Florida Bulls one-upped their conference mates, Notre Dame in becoming the most boring team in college basketball last season.  Rarely would they top the 60-point plateau but they used their stifling defense to epitomize the phrase, “Winning Ugly”and nearly advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.  Can lightning strike for a second straight year at USF?

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Last season, the Villanova Wildcats finished with their worst record during Jay Wright’s 11-year tenure as head coach, also missing out on the NIT or NCAA Tournament for the first time in his regime.  Nova loses their top two scorers from last year but it could be a case of addition by subtraction as I expect the Wildcats to be a middle of the pack Big East squad.

Will the Rutgers Scarlet Knight ever turn the corner as a basketball program?  We’re still waiting for that day as it has now been 11 years since Rutgers has finished with a winning record in the Big East Conference.  Mike Rice has quality talent on his roster but the maturation of his young guards and arrival of one key transfer will be the difference between another below five hundred finish or an opportunity to take a step forward.

#76 UConn Huskies: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With Jim Calhoun’s retirement announcement, the UConn Huskies will enter a new era as they will have a different head coach for the first time in a quarter of a century.  Former Husky Kevin Ollie inherits a team that loses several key players from last year’s squad which vastly underachieved and will ineligible for post-season play in 2013.

I was planning on the Providence Friars being one of my sleeper teams this season but with the recent ruling that freshman Ricardo Ledo will be ineligible for this season and the injury to fellow newcomer Kris Dunn, Ed Cooley’s team drops several spots.

#4 UConn Huskies: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The UConn Huskies are coming off a year in which they put together one of the most memorable post-season runs in college basketball history.  They won five games in five days to claim the Big East Tournament Title and didn’t cool off once the NCAA Tournament began, cutting down the nets in Houston.  Even though Jim Calhoun loses the heart and soul of his team, Kemba Walker, the early arrival of Andre Drummond will once again make UConn a national title contender.
