Indianapolis Colts 2012 NFL Draft preview: Andrew Luck, then what?

New Indianapolis Colts GM Ryan Grigson made official Tuesday what we all pretty much knew back in January: the franchise will select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in today’s NFL Draft.

Luck is billed as the most pro-ready quarterback prospect to enter the league since Peyton Manning, the man he’s succeeding in Indianapolis. Some would go even further back and call Luck the surest thing since fellow Stanford great John Elway.

While I personally think such opinions are a bit overkill, I do think very highly of Luck, and I believe he can be the Colts’ next franchise signal-caller for many years to come. Given the recent organizational overhaul in Indy, however, quarterback is far from this team’s only thin spot. The Colts could use talent upgrades everywhere.

The fun, analytically speaking, starts with the No. 34 pick.

Analyzing all 9 Undefeated College Basketball Teams

syracuse-orange

Nine undefeated teams left in all of college basketball. And none of them are named Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Duke (I listed them twice because ESPN loves them so much), Ohio State, Florida or Kansas.

In other words, if you’re still undefeated at this point of this season, you are legit- at least to some extent. By mid December, pretty much everyone has played in a conference “challenge” event and participated in a Holiday tournament. if you didn’t pick up an L in either of those situations, then you likely suffered a setback in some quality opponent non-conference scheduling.

Yes, most of the games up to this point have been cupcakes, but no one has really been able to feed on just  cupcakes for over a month. Let’s run through the 9 remaining perfect teams, in order of AP poll ranking.

Baylor Has NBA Bound Duo in Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller

baylor_perry_jones

There are only 9 undefeateds left in all of college basketball. One of which is the #7 Baylor Bears; who this season are living up to the expectations they didn’t reach last year. Baylor missed the NCAA Tournament in 2010-11, and that shortcoming fuels their fire this season.

Baylor has one of the top frontcourts in the nation, with three long and lean guys who drastically alter the game plans of every opponent they face.

Perry Jones III is a projected top-ten pick in the 2012 NBA Draft; Quincy Acy is a freakishly talented athlete who’s dangerous on both ends of the floor; and Quincy Miller is an instant-impact, 6-9 freshman who could be a one-and-done guy joining Jones in the first round of the draft.

College Football 77 in 77: #43 Baylor Bears

baylor_cheerleading

I was lucky enough to cover two college football bowl games last year in the lone star state. One of which was the Baylor Bears who got throttled by alma mater, the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Texas Bowl. The home field advantage wasn’t enough as the Baylor Bears were dominated 38-14. But that game could have been much closer than it seems; at least for the first two periods. QB Robert Griffin III consistently had receivers open, he just couldn’t connect with them. They were open, but bad timing. It could have been due to: him, his WRs routes, the Illini pressure generated by Corey Liuget (the San Diego Chargers 1st round pick) and company; or a combination of all these things.

Had they made a few of these plays early, they would have stayed with Illinois for the first half and changed the entire complexion of the game. Something to think about in 2011 moving forward. If they fix it, it’ll further balance the O and take the pressure off the D.

Either way, one thing’s for sure- they have some scorching hot cheerleaders (here’s some video proof). Any time these nice Baptist girls want to act on those impure thoughts, get sinful and debauched, shoot me a sext!
