#25 Baylor Bears: College Basketball 111 in 111

Baylor cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The past few years, the Baylor Bears have relied on their lengthy, athletic frontcourt.  Scott Drew loses his entire starting frontcourt including three of their top four scorers meaning the guard play will be relied on to lead the way this season.

Baylor’s Perry Jones III: sliding NBA Draft stock drops him from lottery

perry jones nba draft

Of all the NBA Draft prospects who’ve seen their stock slide this year, Perry Jones III from Baylor could be the one hurting the most. Or at least the one who’s seen his draft stock slide the most. Despite the success of the Baylor Bears this past college basketball season, Jones stock didn’t rise it fell from the top 5, lottery lock down to mid to late first round.

Mostly, it’s on-court concerns as Jones just has not lived up to the hype and potential. He’s been a lot more potential than substance and his last season at Baylor was a huge disappointment.

Did Baylor’s Quincy Miller make a mistake by entering NBA Draft?

quincy miller nba draft

After initially announcing his intention to return to Baylor for his sophomore season, Quincy Miller had a change of heart and declared for the 2012 NBA Draft.  “At first, I was listening to everybody else’s opinion instead my own,” Miller admitted at the NBA Draft Combine.  “Ever since I was younger, I just wanted to play in the NBA so I was like I might as well go follow my dreams.”

Here is an updated on my preseason Top 25 for the 2012-2013 college basketball.  With transfers, the decisions of some previously undeclared top high school recruits, and players declaring their intentions to return to school or leave for the NBA Draft, there has been a lot of movement since I released my original rankings the day after the National Championship game.  (Click here for a list of NBA Draft early entries.) Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here for my way too early preseason rankings from last season.)

Baylor’s Perry Jones leaving for NBA Draft, opens door for Isaiah Austin

isaiah austin baylor

Length, size, athleticism, and versatility.  Those attributes have been staples of Baylor‘s frontcourt for the past few seasons.  Even though the Bears lose Perry Jones who declared for the NBA Draft on Monday, that tradition of size inside will continue with McDonald’s All-American Isaiah Austin arriving in Waco next season.

2012-2013 college basketball preseason top 25

uk national champs

With the Kentucky Wildcats cutting down the nets last night, we can officially close the book on the 2011-2012 college basketball season.  Hoop junkies like myself are already looking ahead to next season so allow me to present to you my way too early 2012-2013 preseason Top 25.

There are still several factors that could alter a teams roster between now and the start of next season.  Some of the top players are still debating on whether or not to enter the NBA Draft, some teams will lose players to transfer, and five McDonald’s All-Americans remain undecided on their college decision including the top two recruits in the 2012 class; Shabazz Muhammad and Nerlens Noel.

So here is my preliminary preseason Top 25.  I will updated these rankings once the NBA Draft early entries list is complete and Muhammaed and Noels make their college decision.  Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here for my way too early preseason rankings from last season.)

Analyzing all 9 Undefeated College Basketball Teams

syracuse-orange

Nine undefeated teams left in all of college basketball. And none of them are named Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Duke (I listed them twice because ESPN loves them so much), Ohio State, Florida or Kansas.

In other words, if you’re still undefeated at this point of this season, you are legit- at least to some extent. By mid December, pretty much everyone has played in a conference “challenge” event and participated in a Holiday tournament. if you didn’t pick up an L in either of those situations, then you likely suffered a setback in some quality opponent non-conference scheduling.

Yes, most of the games up to this point have been cupcakes, but no one has really been able to feed on just  cupcakes for over a month. Let’s run through the 9 remaining perfect teams, in order of AP poll ranking.

Baylor Has NBA Bound Duo in Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller

baylor_perry_jones

There are only 9 undefeateds left in all of college basketball. One of which is the #7 Baylor Bears; who this season are living up to the expectations they didn’t reach last year. Baylor missed the NCAA Tournament in 2010-11, and that shortcoming fuels their fire this season.

Baylor has one of the top frontcourts in the nation, with three long and lean guys who drastically alter the game plans of every opponent they face.

Perry Jones III is a projected top-ten pick in the 2012 NBA Draft; Quincy Acy is a freakishly talented athlete who’s dangerous on both ends of the floor; and Quincy Miller is an instant-impact, 6-9 freshman who could be a one-and-done guy joining Jones in the first round of the draft.

#7 Baylor Bears: College Basketball 111 in 111

baylor cheerleading

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

A year after nearly making the Final Four, the Baylor Bears were expected to do big things last season.  However, the team never truly jelled together and missed out on the NCAA Tournament.  With Perry Jones’ somewhat surprising decision to return to Waco, Baylor has one of the most talented rosters in the country.  Can Scott Drew put it all together though?
