Virginia Cavaliers Should Beat Auburn, According to Data Models

tony-bennett

During a four day span in March of 2016, the United Center in Chicago, Illinois hosted two events that had served as a major crossroads in the recent history of Virginia Cavaliers basketball. On Sunday March 27, Virginia blew a 16 point lead to a #10 seeded Syracuse team that most people believed only got into the big dance due to their brand name.

The epic collapse in this Regional Final game was scarring for UVA fans. Three days later, on the same exact court, high school senior and Cavaliers commit Kyle Guy played in the McDonald’s All-American Game.

Auburn fans join forces with Notre Dame (photo)

It happens every BCS title game and Final Four- the decision to root for the team from your conference or against them. When it’s your bitter rival that’s in the finals of college basketball or college football than the decision is probably much easier. It certainly seems that way for Auburn Tigers fans. They’ve joined with Notre Dame against their in-state rival Alabama Crimson Tide.

#26 Auburn Tigers: College Football 77 in 77

What did we just learn from Joe Paterno? Erecting a statue for someone while they’re still alive and their legacy is not yet fully formed is risky business. And sometimes backfires. There’s already a Cam Newton statue at Auburn. Again, something scandalous could arise, especially given Newton’s past history.

The Bo Jackson statue I’m cool with; his career is long over.

As for the Auburn Tigers this college football season, a step forward? 2011 was rebuilding from the title year of 2010, so now better things are expected. Even though they’re breaking in a new coordinator on each side of the ball

#106 Auburn Tigers: College Basketball 111 in 111

Auburn Cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

As if another losing season wasn’t enough for the Auburn Tigers to deal with, the basketball program had one of their players, Varez Ward, investigated by the FBI for a point shaving allegation.  On top of that, Tony Barbee had to dismiss two other players and lost two more to transfer.

Auburn Tigers women get breast implants? Suggestive billboard now removed

auburn-boob-jobs

I guess this was a little bit in poor taste, and a lot offensive: using a sense of community to a college football fanbase to get a boob job. Telling female fans of the Auburn Tigers, they needed breast implants is just a hair politically incorrect.

SEC Football: Oversigning (“Cheating”)=More Championships

auburn_cam_newton

As Wes Bynum’s 19-yarder sailed through the desert air to split the uprights and down Oregon in the Tostitos BCS national championship there was no question Auburn was the best team in college football.  There was also no doubt which conference was at the top of the summit.  The cheers of “S-E-C” that rained down like ticker-tape on the Auburn players and coaches was evidence enough.  Fans chanting the conference’s moniker knew, and so did the rest of the nation, the SEC, with victories in the last five national championships, was college football’s king.

Fans, writers and even coaches have sought to explain this domination.  Many pegged blazing SEC speed as the reason, asserting that kids from Florida and Georgia just have better wheels than farm-boys from Ohio and Wisconsin.  For years, that reasoning has been widely accepted, but lately a new explanation has bubbled to the surface: oversigning.

Report: LSU Could Be Without Three Key Cogs Vs. Auburn

Just three days after it was revealed that the LSU Tigers had edged the Alabama Crimson Tide in the first BCS rankings, the news turned bad for the squad. They will be hosting the Auburn Tigers in the Feline Bowl in Death Valley, and they will be doing it without three of its top players. According to reports from Baton Rouge, the team has suspended running back Spencer Ware and defensive backs Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu and Tharold Simon for the game. LSU officials refused to confirm or deny the report, saying that the players were involved in an “internal matter” that would be handled by head coach Les Miles.

LSU, Alabama Top First BCS Rankings

With seven weeks done in the college football season, the first edition of the BCS rankings came out on Sunday night, and there were a few surprises through the list. The LSU Tigers ended up edging the Alabama Crimson Tide on the list, finishing a mere .0003 points ahead of them in average. The Oklahoma Sooners ended up finishing in the third spot, followed closely by conference rival Oklahoma State at fourth. Boise State rounded out the top five, with Wisconsin, Clemson, and Stanford close behind.

Tigers Bulldoze Shorthanded Gators Behind Big Offensive Effort

Spencer Ware rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns, and Reuben Randall had four catches for 127 yards and a touchdown in the LSU Tigers’ 41-11 thrashing of the Florida Gators in Death Valley. The LSU defense stood strong as well, only allowing 213 yards to the Gators’ attack, and they also forced two turnovers in the contest.

Alabama Demolishes Florida, Puts Nation on Notice in Big Win

In what was supposed to be a showcase of two of the best defenses in the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide steamrolled the Florida Gators 38-10 on Saturday night in Gainesville. Trent Richardson racked up 181 rushing yards and scored twice, and Courtney Upshaw returned an intercepted John Brantley pass 45 yards for a touchdown as the Tide dealt the Gators a crushing defeat, especially on a day when the SEC East was right there for the taking.

College Football 77 in 77: #42 Auburn Tigers

auburn dance team

Here we go, we’re finally into the “real teams.” From here on out, no more programs from these four categories: a.) good, although obscure mid-major program

b.)  BcS conference team that has fallen from grace

c.) college basketball powerhouse where college football is an overlooked afterthought.

d.) big glut of ACC mediocrity and Big East below average junk.

Because that’s what the 70s, 60s, and 50s are all about in the 77 in 77s. But from now on, it’s looking up. So may wonder, what are the defending national champion Auburn Tigers doing here down this low? Well, out of 22 starters on both sides of the ball, they return 5. Yes, a whopping five. They have to break in 3/4 of a new secondary, pretty much an entire new OL and receiving corps. And replace Nick Fairley, the most dominating DL in football last year and quarterback Cam Newton, the #1 overall pick/Heisman Trophy…so uhm yeah, this is a rebuilding year.
