Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks were picked to win the Atlantic 10 title in the preseason polls and with good reason as Phil Martelli returns everybody from last year’s team.

#40 VCU Rams: College Basketball 111 in 111

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Over the past six seasons, the VCU Rams have won an average of nearly 27 games per year and made four trips to the NCAA Tournament.  Moving from the CAA to the Atlantic 10 will certainly be a step up in competition, but Shaka Smart should have his team battling for a conference crown from the get go.

By returning four starters off last year’s team that advanced to the NIT Final Four, the UMass Minutemen will be one of several teams competing for the Atlantic 10 title and trip to the Big Dance for the first time in 15 years.

The Butler Bulldogs pre-season began on a rough note with expected starting point guard Chrishawn Hopkins getting dismissed from the team.  Still, Brad Stevens has enough talent on the roster to bounce back from a less than stellar year in the Horizon League and be extremely successful in transitioning to the Atlantic 10 Conference.

With Rick Majerus having to step down due to health concerns and the injury to starting point guard Kwamain Mitchell, the season has gotten off to an auspicious start for a St. Louis Billikens team that is expected to contend for the Atlantic 10 title.  How they are able to overcome those two obstacles will be the determining factor when the dust settles in March.

The Temple Owls have been the model of consistency, winning twenty-plus games in each of the past five seasons.  The Atlantic 10 is arguably as loaded as it has ever been meaning Fran Dunphy’s team has their work cut out for them this season before heading to the Big East.

#78 Xavier Musketeers: College Basketball 111 in 111

Year in and year out, the Xavier Musketeers are a perennial mid-major power.  They can compete with some of the best power conference teams around and always test themselves with a challenging non-conference schedule.  This season will be a year of transition for Chris Mack though as X loses all five of its starters including Dezmine Wells who was recently expelled from the school.

With the addition of Butler and VCU, the Atlantic 10 conference is stronger than ever.  As a result, the Dayton Flyers figure to get lost in the mix.

Butler officially leaves Horizon League for Atlantic 10

Butler University will join the Atlantic 10 Conference beginning with the 2013-2014 season, President James M. Danko announced today.

The move will cover all Butler athletic teams except football, which will remain in the Pioneer League, and woman’s golf. The Atlantic 10 adds a recently historically successful men’s basketball program in Butler to their conference. The only non big six conference to have 41 at-large NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections in the past 20 years, including three in 2012, the A-10 has boasted 62 postseason appearances in the last decade.

The top spot in the Atlantic 10 figures to once again be a battle between Temple and XavierFran Dunphy returns all but one of his key contributors from last year and will feature an experienced backcourt.

Every team in the Atlantic 10 will be chasing Xavier and Temple this season.  If there is one sleeper team that could catch either the Musketeers or Owls, it could be the George Washington Colonials and their new head coach Mike Lonergan.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Despite underachieving the past two seasons, Dayton Flyers head coach Brian Gregory found greener pastures this off-season at Georgia Tech.  After serving as an assistant under his brother at Arizona the past two seasons, Archie Miller takes over a Flyer team that loses a couple of key contributors from last year.
