Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks were picked to win the Atlantic 10 title in the preseason polls and with good reason as Phil Martelli returns everybody from last year’s team.

Over the past six seasons, the VCU Rams have won an average of nearly 27 games per year and made four trips to the NCAA Tournament.  Moving from the CAA to the Atlantic 10 will certainly be a step up in competition, but Shaka Smart should have his team battling for a conference crown from the get go.

The Butler Bulldogs pre-season began on a rough note with expected starting point guard Chrishawn Hopkins getting dismissed from the team.  Still, Brad Stevens has enough talent on the roster to bounce back from a less than stellar year in the Horizon League and be extremely successful in transitioning to the Atlantic 10 Conference.

With Rick Majerus having to step down due to health concerns and the injury to starting point guard Kwamain Mitchell, the season has gotten off to an auspicious start for a St. Louis Billikens team that is expected to contend for the Atlantic 10 title.  How they are able to overcome those two obstacles will be the determining factor when the dust settles in March.

The Temple Owls have been the model of consistency, winning twenty-plus games in each of the past five seasons.  The Atlantic 10 is arguably as loaded as it has ever been meaning Fran Dunphy’s team has their work cut out for them this season before heading to the Big East.

Year in and year out, the Xavier Musketeers are a perennial mid-major power.  They can compete with some of the best power conference teams around and always test themselves with a challenging non-conference schedule.  This season will be a year of transition for Chris Mack though as X loses all five of its starters including Dezmine Wells who was recently expelled from the school.

99 in 99: #26 Xavier Musketeers

xavier musketeers

Xavier is in that Memphis/Gonzaga/Butler category of technically being a mid-major, but not really being a mid-major.  Year-in and year-out, they are a Top 25 team and despite having to replace dynamic scorer Jordan Crawford, this season should be no different for the Musketeers.

99 in 99: #38 Dayton Flyers

Dayton NIT Champions

A pre-season Top 25 team a year ago, Dayton was supposed to be the cream of the crop in the Atlantic 10.  Instead, the Flyers floundered finishing a disappointing seventh place in a surprisingly competitive conference.  They missed out on the NCAA Tournament but took home the NIT Championship… which poses the question; would you rather your team make it to the NCAA Tournament and be a one-and-done or have your team win the NIT?  Discuss.

99 in 99: #48 St. Louis Billikens (UPDATE: 10/13)

Billikens mascot

Without a single senior on the roster, St. Louis became one of the surprise teams in the country last season ending with very respectable fourth place finish in the competitive Atlantic 10 Conference.  One year older, the Billikens will no longer fly under the radar as they hope to battle for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

(10/13 UPDATE: St. Louis University sent out a release stating that their top two players Willie Reed and Kwamain Mitchell are no longer enrolled at the school.  Read more about that here.  This obviously kills the Billikens’ chances of being a sleeper team in the A-10 and drops them out of my top 99.)

The Sports Bank’s “99 in 99” ranks the 72 power conference college basketball teams and top 27 mid-majors.  Our countdown will lead right up to the start of the season and provide you will all the in-depth information about the top teams in the game.  Click here if you missed teams #49-#99.
