Finally! The Irish beat the Trojans … yes, I mean ND vs. USC

notre dame

He came to Notre Dame four years ago to win and make a difference on the field. Many would argue that he never came close to his goal … until tonight.

Robert Hughes’ heart, soul and determination led the Irish to their first victory over Southern Cal in the past nine years. He was benched more than once during his career. He was in South Bend when his brother was murdered. He watched his team fall apart … year after year …

But he never gave up.

And then, when it mattered the most, he stepped up and led his beloved Irish to victory.

Notre Dame Loses Starting Tailback for the Season

armando allen

In the last few days, Notre Dame’s 2010 season went from disappointing to an absolute nightmare. Two weeks ago, Tight end Kyle Rudolph, arguably the team’s best player, was lost for the season with injury.

On Wednesday, the Declan Sullivan tragedy occurred. Saturday saw the loss of starting QB Dayne Crist for the season. And after the loss to Tulsa, the smallest program in FBS college football (who also possess the worst pass defense in the nation), Head Coach Brian Kelly announced that starting tailback Armando Allen, who’s 6th all-time in school history on the career all-purpose yardage list, will no longer play another down at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan: the Brutally Honest Game Preview

Notre Dame Stadium

Here we go #1 vs. #2…not in the national polls mind you, as both of these teams are unranked. However, Michigan is number one all time in winning percentage (.737) and Notre Dame is second (.734).

In all-time wins, the Wolverines are first with 877, ND is third with 838. This match-up clearly doesn’t have the same sizzle as years past, but it does feature two decent programs in the rebuilding process. And we’ll learn who’s taken a step further in their development on Saturday.

And if you’re like me, someone who’s borderline sexually aroused by games with a lot of passing yards (ok, that’s bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea) then you’ll love this contest. Two fast, athletic and talented wide receiving corps squaring off against two mediocre-on-a-good-day secondaries.

There will be so much aerial combat, it’s time to cue up “Highway…..to….THE DANGER ZONE,” Kenny Loggins’ theme from “Top Gun.” This will be a better show than what Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez saw last week.

Throughout the season, I’ll be bringing you these informative yet blunt game previews of every contest I cover (and a second game that week that interests me); with a heavy focus on my three “home teams” Northwestern, Illinois, Notre Dame, and the Big Ten in general.

Meet Armando Allen: Notre Dame Starting Tailback (Video)

armandp allen

Head Coach Brian Kelly brings a new spread-option style offense to Notre Dame, and many skill position players are licking their chops. It is believed this new pass-first system will open things up for the running game by spreading opposing defenders out. And the running backs in this system will no doubt also become “receiving backs” as they’ll be called upon to catch more passes than in the pro style system under Charlie Weis.

Starting at tailback for ND this is fall is 5’10” 205 lb senior Armando Allen, who is second all-time on the school list for receptions by a running back (102-695-3). He should make a good fit in the new system. His career rushing numbers read 362-1,630-6-4.5 per carry, with a career high 139 rushing yards versus Michigan last year.
