Twins Draft Pick, Ohio St. Hurler named National Pitcher of the Year

Alex Wimmers has been chosen as the best pitcher in college baseball for the 2010 season. Ohio State’s junior All-American, who fashioned a 9-0 record and a 1.61 earned run average this season, was named by the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) as its National Pitcher of the Year Friday in Lubbock, Texas.

Career-wise Wimmers, who was drafted in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins, ranks among Ohio State’s all-time Top 5 in four key statistical areas and he is sixth in another. He is fourth at Ohio State in fewest runs allowed (81) and he is fifth in strikeouts (273), fewest earned runs allowed (71) and fewest hits (173). He is also sixth in earned run average (2.94). His 18 career victories rank 23rd. His strikeout total is also good for a tie for 16th-place all-time in the Big Ten Conference.

Minnesota Twins draft Ohio State’s Alex Wimmers in 1st round

Alex Wimmers has already distinguished himself on the playing field as an Ohio State Buckeye by becoming the first-ever back-to-back Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.

Wimmers, a draft-eligible junior from Cincinnati and Archbishop Moeller High School, became only the sixth first-round draft pick in Ohio State history when the Minnesota Twins chose him with the 21st pick of the first round in the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. He joins an exclusive list of Ohio State first-rounders that includes current New York Yankee Nick Swisher, the 16th overall pick of the 2002 first-year player draft.

Ohio State’s Alex Wimmers a Golden Spikes Semifinalist


Two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year finishes season 9-0 with a 1.60 ERA. and a chance at college baseball’s Heisman.

The Buckeyes’ Alex Wimmers positioned for numerous post-season awards and All-America honors.Tuesday Wimmers, Ohio State’s talented junior pitcher from Cincinnati, Ohio, and Archbishop Moeller High School, was named one of 30 semifinalists for USA Baseball’s 2010 Golden Spikes Award. This is the second consecutive year that Wimmers is a semifinalist for the prestigious award, which will be presented for the 33rd time to the best amateur baseball player in America.
