2012 Big Ten/ACC Challenge Preview and Predictions

big ten/acc challenge

The twelve-game Big Ten/ACC Challenge tips off tonight with the top four ranked teams in the nation; Duke, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State all in action.  After losing the first ten challenges, the Big Ten looks for their fourth straight win in this battle of power conferences.  To be completely blunt; they should have zero problem doing so as the Big Ten has far more depth than the ACC.

#6 N.C. State Wolfpack: College Basketball 111 in 111

n.c. state cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

It all started clicking down the stretch of last season for the North Carolina State Wolfpack and first year head coach Mark Gottfried as they advanced to the Sweet 16, narrowly missing out on the Elite 8.  N.C. State rolled over Miami (OH) in their opener showing why they are considered the ACC favorites.

Here’s a major reach of a statement; The Duke Blue Devils are going to be good this year.  (Although they were good last year and shocked in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament by 15 seed Lehigh.)  Do they have enough talent to be a true title contender though?  I just don’t see it.

The North Carolina Tar Heels never rebuild, they reload.  Despite losing four starters who were all first round picks in the 2012 NBA Draft, UNC has a talented squad but there are some questions marks.

There have to be some bold predictions in my rankings or else I’d be boring.  One of those is that the Miami Hurricanes will have a firm grip on being the fourth best team in the ACC since six of their top seven scorers are back from last season.

Overrated. (Clap, clap, clap-clap, clap).  Even though they lost six valuable seniors from last season’s team that won the ACC Tournament, the Florida State Seminoles are ranked 24th in the preseason coaches’ poll.  As you can tell by my ranking, that’s way too high for a squad that will have to rely on a lot of inexperienced players in key roles.

Two steps forward, one step back.  A year after making the NCAA Tournament, Tony Bennett’s Virginia Cavaliers are unlikely to match that level of success with a young roster that doesn’t boast a whole lot of size or skill inside.

Mark Turgeon’s first year as Maryland Terrapins head coach, post-Gary Williams era, was met with struggles as most expected.  Turgeon’s revamping of the roster means the Terps will once again be short-handed this season with only nine scholarship players eligible for the up-coming year.

With only two seniors on their roster, (one who has massively underachieved for the most part) the Clemson Tigers are not in a position to make any real noise in the ACC.

As expected, year one of Brian Gregory’s rebuilding effort at Georgia Tech encountered several bumps in the road.  While the Yellow Jackets return six of their top seven scorers and bring in a solid recruiting class, they still lack the firepower to be a real competitor in the ACC.

#101 Boston College Eagles: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With one of the youngest rosters in all of college basketball last season, the Boston College Eagles understandably struggled last season.  With eight freshmen now becoming sophomores, BC brings more experience to the floor this season but that won’t necessarily translate into more wins.

Finishing in the cellar of the ACC last season cost Seth Greenberg his job as head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies.   Assistant James Johnson was named new head coach but only has eight scholarship players on his active roster for the upcoming season as he tries to rebuild VA Tech’s program.
