#11 Michigan Wolverines vs. Northwestern Wildcats: Brutally Honest Game Preview

If you ever needed any more evidence that Greg Robinson was in fact THE WORST Defensive Coordinator in college football history, look no further than what the Michigan Wolverines defense has done this year. They’ve only given up 10 whole points in their last three games, and the unit is more opportunistic and turnover-forcing (more on that here)

Sure, this unit has their two best DBs which they missed last year, but they also graduated their best defender from 2010. Personally, I knew Robinson was fired the minute I saw Illini RB Mikel Leshoure burn UM not once, but twice with the exact same wheel route in the 67-65 game. The exact same play the Illini burned Purdue the very week before.

Is the Mich defense that much better? Yes. Are they really that good? NO!

The visit to the Northwestern Wildcats will be big blue’s first time away from the big house in 2011, and their schedule has been soft. Are they a good team? Yes. Are they a top ten team in the nation? NO!

Notre Dame vs. Michigan: Brutally Honest Game Preview

notre dame fighting irish frozen four

ESPN College Football Game Day will make a return trip to Ann Arbor for the first time since the 2007 season as the Michigan Wolverines host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the “Under the Lights” matchup kicking off at 8 p.m. EDT and will be televised on ESPN. That’s right the first night game in the 133 year history of UM football. Have to quote Kanye West and Rihanna here: “turn up the lights in here baby. Extra bright I want y’all to see this.”

It’s just too bad neither team is ranked; it would give the contest more oomph. At least there’s loads of tradition, as both schools are top 5 in all time wins and winning percentage.

Former U-M Heisman Trophy winner (1991) and current ESPN College Football Game Day analyst, Desmond Howard, will be honored in conjunction with the game.

Next Ndamukong Suh: Michigan Wolverines Mike Martin? Possibly?

suh

Detroit Lions DL Ndamukong Suh was fined $20,000 by the NFL Wednesday for a hit on Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton, Suh’s third fine of this sort in the past year. He was obviously upset, tweeting before practice: “$20,000REALLY???!!!!!!… #NFL #BIGFAIL”

The reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year grabbed the Bengals rookie ginger-haired quarterback after he released the ball, and threw him to the turf in the first quarter of Friday’s preseason game. Suh was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Infractions aside, Suh is a beast among beasts, and the search is on for NFL teams to find the next game-changing DL in his mold. How about Jared Crick, who’s tearing it up for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Suh’s alma mater? Well, Crick is a dominating player in his own right; but he’s not like Suh. We’ll explore this more in a future post.

But we may have found another Suh.

The Michigan Wolverines has been playing this game for 131 seasons. Yep that’s a lot of college football; much more than pretty much every program. But this year there’s a lot more change in Ann Arbor than usual. A new coach in Brady Hoke, another expansion to Michigan Stadium, making the big house even bigger. And the very first night game in the stadium’s history versus Notre Dame.

Hoke caught some attention at his very first Big Ten media day, for making a couple statements which sounded a bit condescending and off-putting.

“This might sound arrogant, and if it is, it is. We’re Michigan,” Hoke said.

“We have a global education. We’re the winningest program in the history of college football. We have a tremendous staff of guys. The lifeblood for all of us, no doubt, is the guys you bring in your program. We’ve really tried to focus on the guys that fit the mold of Michigan with the integrity and character that we want to have.”
