#50 VCU Rams: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

After their Cinderella run to the Final Four last season, part of me has a really hard time ranking the VCU Rams this low.  They seem ready to emerge as a yearly, dangerous mid-major team as long as Shaka Smart is running the show.  However, with four starters gone from last year, VCU has to replace a lot of experience.

The Northwestern Wildcats have the dancing ability of Elaine from Seinfeld.  The main difference between the two; at least Elaine has actually danced before.  Northwestern has still never played in the NCAA Tournament although they have flirted with being a bubble team the past three seasons.  That should once again be the case in 2011-2012.

With four straight twenty-plus win seasons, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane have re-established a program that saw a great stretch of success from the mid-nineties to early 2000’s.  However, a NCAA Tournament bid has still evaded the program for nearly a decade.  Another twenty wins could be on the horizon if Tulsa can find a way to replace Justin Hurtt.  Will that be enough to get them back into the Field of 68?

For the second straight season, the LSU Tigers finished dead last in the SEC .  That streak figures to end in 2011-2012, but it certainly will not come easy for Trent Johnson and company.

Firing their head coach, losing their best player to the NBA Draft, and being hit with NCAA violations; not exactly the ideal off-season for a program.  Now the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets enter the season with only nine scholarship players and will likely be even worse this year than they were a season ago.

Last season the Seton Hall Pirates were an experienced team expected to compete for a NCAA Tournament berth.  An injury to Jeremy Hazell threw a wrench into those expectations.  This season there will be no such thing as second year head coach Kevin Willard deals with some major turnover to the Pirates’ roster.
