#15 Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Ohio State Buckeyes: Brutally Honest Game Preview

ohio state cheerleader

When was the last time Ohio State were underdogs to the Fighting Illini? Was Dick Butkus still on campus? When the 3-3 Buckeyes visit #15 6-0 Illinois Saturday, no one will expect them to win.

And why should they? Whenever Illinois and Ohio State are close to being on the same page, the Illini almost always win. Whenever OSU is way above Illinois (what happens in most seasons) OSU wins. This year, the roles are totally reversed as Ohio St. is 0-2 in the Big Ten for just the second time since 1993, and losers of back-to-back games for the first time in 88 games (2004), snapping the nation’s longest streak without consecutive losses.

But hey, they do rank sixth in the NCAA with 27.4 yards per kickoff return. And given the opening kick disaster for the Illini last week in Bloomington, this statistic might have more relevance than you think.

Illinois won five in a row in this series from 1988-1992, and that sadly includes their most recent home win over the Buckeyes (1991). This sounds a little bit BUCKNUTS!!! but the Illini do much better in Columbus, winning there four times in the past fifteen years, including the famous 2007 game when OSU was #1.

Ohio State will soon be #1 in College Basketball Polls

The great American poet Cornell Haynes once posed this existential query:

“What does it take to be #1, two is not a winner, and three nobody remembers.” In slightly more recent history, another local wordsmith named Kanye West stated “number one can’t put nothing above that. You deserve a verse from me, we’re going to party like it’s our anniversary.”

Today, the Ohio State Buckeyes, among favorites to win the Big Ten, now looking like serious contenders for a national title, are living these lyrics. With the Florida State upset over Duke, the polls will later today deem the Buckeyes the new rulers of college basketball.

OSU fans, I hope you run these two rap references into the ground, exactly like I did in 2004-05 when Illinois was #1 for most of the season. It’s pretty rare for the same school to assume the #1 ranking in both college football and college basketball, but OSU is about to pull it off.

But again, this is the same school that (along with the University of Florida) played for the national title in both college basketball and football.

Here’s what some of the stars of the team had to say:

AND THAT’S ONE MILLION SPORTS BANK PAGE VIEWS…….NOW!!!

celebration

Everything changes today, yet everything stays the same. It’s business as usual this banner day, but I’m revolutionizing the emotion surrounding my approach. I’ve been too much like Chad Ocho Cinco or Terrell Owens when it comes to handling success. Cocky, brash, bragging about traffic stats, tweeting my Alexa traffic rank.

However, now that we’ve reached a new benchmark, a new summit, I’ll be more professional than a Ron Turner press conference. Success is no surprise; it’s standard protocol. Like Barry Sanders visiting the end zone: “act like you’ve been there before.”

Quote Eminem’s 8 Mile soundtrack, “I was playing in the beginning; the mood all changed!” In two years and change I’ve gone from blogger/hobbyist to entrepreneur.

I am a journalist, but I do a helluva lot more than attending and covering sporting events. In addition to doing an overwhelming majority of TSB’s posting and writing, I also do the programming, source code debugging, SEO strategy, content editing, managing, recruiting/motivating of writers, and negotiating/working with our 11 ad networks.

All the while trying to augment/maintain our site’s ComScore rating. Whatever that is.
