Ohio State Keeps Fickell, Vrabel on Staff, Add Defensive Coordinator

Luke Fickell

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer added another staff member today: Everett Withers, the current interim head coach at the University of North Carolina.

Withers has been a collegiate coach for 17 years and has also worked seven seasons in the National Football League: six years (2001-06) as defensive backs coach with the Tennessee Titans under Jeff Fisher, and a year (1994) as a defensive quality control coach for the New Orleans Saints. In Columbus, he’ll serve as co-defensive coordinator with this year’s interim Head Coach Luke Fickell.

Ohio State Pounds George Mason 98-66: NCAA 3rd Round Rapid Reaction

Not even a slow start could stop the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes from blowing out #8 George Mason 98-66 in front of essentially a home-crowd in the 3rd Round of the NCAA Tournament.

As Gus Johnson so eloquently exclaimed “Home Cookin,” because Cleveland native David Lighty was brilliant with a game-high 25 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.

Lighty wasn’t the only one stroking from deep as the Buckeyes broke an OSU NCAA Tournament record with 16 made three-pointers en route to their most lopsided tournament win in school history.

Ohio State 71, Penn St. 60: BTT Championship Rapid Reaction

The surprising Penn State Nittany Lions stuck around for as long as they could, but the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes proved to be too much to handle in a 71-60 win for their third Big Ten Tournament Championship in the last five years.

William Buford led the way with 18 for the Buckeyes and Talor Battle paced the Nittany Lions with 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting.

Ohio State Buckeyes Aaron Craft Maturing Before Our Eyes

On Friday, the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes experienced two things their team rarely experiences; an off-shooting performance and a close game resulting in overtime. Luckily for the Buckeyes, they were able to hold on and knock off the pesky Northwestern Wildcats by the score of 67-61 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Freshman Aaron Craft was particularly great on Friday with his hard-nosed defense and a sense of confidence which has you constantly asking how old is this kid.

Senior glue-man David Lighty summed up Craft perfectly by saying “He’s not a freshman, his play speaks for itself. He comes in and plays his role to perfection.”

#1 Ohio State BARELY Survives Northwestern

ohio state buckeyes

Well, it’s going to happen sometime. Just not tonight. I’m speaking of course about the #1 team in all of college basketball, the Ohio State Buckeyes finally losing a game at some point this season.

Heading to Northwestern seemed like a cakewalk for the Bucks as the Wildcats have suffered two awful losses already to the Illini and Wisconsin. And they would be sans their best player in John Shurna.

But it didn’t end that way. NU took the lead on more than one occasion late in the first half, and trailed by just two at intermission. Perhaps most stunning was the fact NU had +6 rebounding margin for the first 20 minutes.

Apparently, Thad Matta’s halftime speech wasn’t enough to get his team to pull away though, as Ohio St. fell behind again during the closing minutes of the second half. NU had a couple chances to win it in the final minute, but came up just short. Drew Crawford’s half court buzzer beater was wide left as time expired, and the Buckeyes won 58-57.

Undefeated Season in the Cards For #1 Ohio State?

jared sullinger

Tuesday night’s game between top-ranked Ohio State and No. 12 Purdue – freshman phenom Jared Sullinger vs. the Moore/Johnson combo – had the makings for a classic Big Ten battle. Instead, it was a one-sided affair in favor of the Buckeyes as they embarrassed the Boilermakers 87-64.

Point Guard Aaron Craft Emerging as Star for #1 Ohio St.

aaron craft

Last night, a national audience on ESPN saw the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes win their most important conference home game over the #12 Purdue Boilermakers in a game that was never even remotely close. A main reason why is freshman point guard Aaron Craft, who took home player of the game honors during the broadcast.

His box score wasn’t all that impressive, but it truly featured a little bit of everything.

This followed a game in which the Buckeyes came back from a big second half deficit to defeat the Illini; a game in which Craft harassed Demetri McCamey, one of the best point guards in the nation, into by far his worst shooting game of the season.

And this follows Craft’s Big Ten Freshman player of the week performance (1-17-11), a week in which he produced14.5 ppg, 56% fg, 60% 3pt.

Ohio State will soon be #1 in College Basketball Polls

ohio state cheerleader

The great American poet Cornell Haynes once posed this existential query:

“What does it take to be #1, two is not a winner, and three nobody remembers.” In slightly more recent history, another local wordsmith named Kanye West stated “number one can’t put nothing above that. You deserve a verse from me, we’re going to party like it’s our anniversary.”

Today, the Ohio State Buckeyes, among favorites to win the Big Ten, now looking like serious contenders for a national title, are living these lyrics. With the Florida State upset over Duke, the polls will later today deem the Buckeyes the new rulers of college basketball.

OSU fans, I hope you run these two rap references into the ground, exactly like I did in 2004-05 when Illinois was #1 for most of the season. It’s pretty rare for the same school to assume the #1 ranking in both college football and college basketball, but OSU is about to pull it off.

But again, this is the same school that (along with the University of Florida) played for the national title in both college basketball and football.

Here’s what some of the stars of the team had to say:
