Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg is the favorite to be Tom Thibodeau’s replacement, reports ESPN’s Marc Stein. Hoiberg has been rumored to Chicago for a very long time and was recently quoted as stating that his dream is to coach in the NBA.
If Hoiberg doesn’t happen, and there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t, then the replacement for Thibs is likely to be former Bulls assistant Adrian Griffin.
Fred Hoiberg has a 115-65 record in ISU. He’s injected new life into a program that was down; and he built a reputation by taking in other team’s cast-offs and re-treads. Hoiberg has taken the island of misfit toys and built them into a winner albeit not a powerhouse. There isn’t anything all that special about Hoiberg’s body of work.
Of course, he’s not the next Tim Floyd either, so the alarmists are overreacting a bit with that characterization.
So today, the Bulls finally pulled the trigger and made it official. They officially dismissed Tom Thibodeau. Here’s the release:
