See this is Why Star Athletes Don’t Usually Talk Politics

If you’ve ever wondered why college and pro sports teams employ media handlers to train their athletes on public speaking, well Wednesday gave you the answer; repeatedly. Below you’ll find four examples of why publicists and media relations departments want all their players to be like Tom Brady, Russell Wilson or Derek Jeter- talk, without every saying anything.

That said, we’re ecstatic that “stick to sports” is pretty much dead now. Thank you Colin Kaepernick for being the primary driving force is getting this to happen. While we’ll focus here on the athletes expressing sociopolitical views that we disagree with, we absolutely support their right to express those views. Better to lose some of your audience but retain all of your soul, no matter what side you’re on.

Pistons Coach Dwane Casey Sees Little Progress Made on Racism

America’s original sin is slavery, and long after the Emancipation Proclamation, the great divide in this country continues to manifest itself in a racist driven form. Segregation, Jim Crow, Voter Discrimination, Birtherism, the MAGA movement and back once again at the forefront- bigoted police brutality.

Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey released a long, poignant and powerful statement today. He fears for his eight-year-old son, and the world he’ll grow up in. In the statement, Casey harkened back to when he was eight year old himself, living in the Jim Crow era segregated south. The Pistons released this statement today, while many of our nation’s cities are recovering from riots last night, and bracing for more rioting to come tonight.

NASCAR Returns: How it Will All Work Behind the Scenes

nascar-general-wesley-clark

As Aaron Burr said to Alexander Hamilton right before they realized a duel was inevitable: “alright, so we’re doing this.”

Well, it’s what he said in the musical, so you can gauge how historically accurate that statement is on your own. Also, Burr said it in Act I as the two were preparing to serve as seconds in a duel between two other men, not their own, but you get the idea. NASCAR is indeed doing this, getting back to real live racing, this Sunday at Darlington Raceway.

Have Energy for Jay Cutler-Kristin Cavallari Divorce Discourse? Your Life’s Not Bad!

jay-cutler-kristin-cavallari-chicago-bears-season-preview

It was just two tweeks ago today that Kristin Cavallari, “reality star,” announced that she and her husband, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, are getting divorced. This past week, Cavallari spoke out publicly, calling Cutler “lazy” and “unmotivated.”

It was a very calculated move, as K-Cav seized upon and exploited the public perception of Cutler that of a man who is rather emotionally distant and insouciant. Of course, this depiction of him is fairly consistent with the reputation that Cutler earned during his professional playing career, especially so while he was with the Chicago Bears.

Is Sports Betting Losing the Race to Gambling Online?

For a long time, Nevada was the single US state where conventional sports betting was permissible. Since the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey’s battle to introduce sports betting in 2018, however, the industry has been in the ascendancy. The number of states offering legalized sports betting now stands at 21, with more expected to join the fold.

The positive effects on the industry are already being felt, and they’re expected to skyrocket in the coming years. According to Gambling Compliance, the market value will reach a staggering $8.1 billion in revenues by 2024. With some of the biggest sports leagues on the planet calling the United States home, it’s not exactly a surprising prediction. [Read more…]

Mavericks, Illini Legend Derek Harper on Friendship with Mark Cuban

The Wikipedia page of Derek Harper describes him as one of the best players never to have made an All-Star Game. After being named to the University of Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame this week, the legendary former Illini did a teleconference call with the media.

He was asked what he believes his legacy will be, and he responded by saying he really doesn’t think too much about it, but he also offered this very substantive answer: “I think people will remember Derek Harper because he left it on the floor every single night.”

“Played with a passion, tough-minded…I gave the game every breath I had. To me, that’s enough.”

Brian Kelly Conveys Proper Perspective During Pandemic

Today was the first day that Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly met the media since the coronavirus pandemic completely altered life as we know it. Actually, he “virtually” met the media, as he conducted a conference call on Zoom late this afternoon.

It’s good to be Zoom right now, as that’s the place business is getting done at that includes the sports media business. A whole lot of ground was covered on this call, but one must start with what’s most important, and that’s public health and safety. Kelly said that no one within the program has tested positive for COVID-19; fortunately and thankfully.

Manchester City to Investigate Kyle Walker for Lockdown Sex Party

kyle walker

Kyle Walker joined the ranks of Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, West Ham’s Declan Rice and Chelsea’s Mason Mount as Premier League footballers who have broken quarantine and violated social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.

When Kyle Walker did it though, well, he did so in a very colorful manner, inviting two sex workers to his home. A report in the Sun said Kyle Walker and a friend paid £2,200 for Louise McNamara and a 24-year-old Brazilian woman to his home on Tuesday night. They stayed until Wednesday, the very same day that Walker posted a message to his followers urging them to stay home and shelter in place.

Gretchen Whitmer Partners with Detroit Sports Teams for COVID19 Call to Action PSA

gretchen whitmer

The public profile of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has risen so much lately that she’s now in the mix to potentially be the Democratic VP candidate in 2020. One oddsmaker even lists her as the third most favorable candidate to get the nod, behind only Senators Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar.

Governor Whitmer, or “that woman from Michigan” as the President condescendingly referred to her in one of his painfully awkward and generally awful on every level daily press briefings, is certainly a rising star in the Democratic party right now.

john oliver liverpool transfer rumors

As you know, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver is a Liverpool FC supporter extraordinaire. The Englishman transplanted to America comedian/talk show host does not shy away from his scouser supportership, and the same holds true in the video below.

The Premier League has suspended play until April 4 over coronavirus fears. With Liverpool FC 25 points up with only nine games left, and second place Manchester City (who have ten matches remaining) only able to collect a maximum 30 points the rest of the way, Liverpool are champions-elect. There is an emergency meeting, of all 20 PL clubs, called for Thursday, and reportedly, there is little opposition to rewarding the Merseyside club the silverware.
