Arsene Wenger says he’ll buy more players this January

Arsene Wenger says he’ll acquire more players this upcoming January transfer window.

“I’ve already said we are a bit short. We will be busy,” Wenger is quoted in Sky Sports.

Arsenal have now emerged as Premier League title favorites, especially with all the other usual contenders having inconsistencies and issues in general. To stay up top and capture some silverware, Wenger knows that he needs reinforcements. Especially given how injury plagued his side is.

The January shopping spree has already begun. Here’s more on Arsenal’s first winter signing.

“I’m confident. We fight to stay there. It’s a long way to go, it’s just halfway. Everyone wants to predict who can win it, but it’s only halfway,” the Frenchman said.

“We have to raise above that and show we can deal with all that [pressure]. We have to be guided by playing better football. We can have great solidarity in every game and we have a chance.

“You cannot rule us out. We are first after 19 games. We have a chance and want to fight for it. I believe we are mature enough. If a team is better than us then fair enough. But we must give everything.”

Back in the summertime, Wenger said he felt intense pressure to buy more players before the transfer window shut.

“Of course, there is pressure to keep up with them [his rivals],” Wenger told the media on August 23rd.

“All of them have spent more money, but only one can win the title.”

“It’s not just the consequence of the money they spend in how successful you are, that is why you have to keep your nerve and not buy just because the others buy. You should buy because you have found a player that can really give you a plus.”

“There is always time to take a gamble and we are not against taking a gamble, but what you want is to take a gamble in a market where the opportunity is there.”

Goalkeeper Petr Cech is the only player of consequence that Arsene Wenger brought in this past summer, but what a great acquisition he has turned out to be. So what position(s) and players should they pursue? Probably midfielder first, as that’s the position which is currently most depleted by injury. The back line has been banged up too; and the Gunners could use a defender or two.
