Jadon Sancho Requests No. 7 Shirt From Edinson Cavani

(Update: Sancho deal now confirmed by both Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United)

The Manchester United No.7 shirt had endured quite a slump lately, despite its marvelously rich history. Legends among legends George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo all wore it, but so did busts Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez and Memphis Depay.

While that second group of players have found success elsewhere, they just couldn’t fully succeed in Old Trafford red. One guy who really has succeeded at United however is Edinson Cavani, who wore the shirt last season. He was probably United’s best signing of last summer as he truly delivered the goods.

Everton FC Appoints Rafa Benitez, Despite Fan Backlash

rafa-benitez

You could call Everton FC’s move to appoint Rafa Benitez as the successor to Carlo Ancelotti a polarizing decision, but there seems to be one polarity that’s making a lot more noise right now. Of course, it’s typical and comes with the territory- the angry get much more attention.

Some Everton fans have an open mind about the decision to hire a former Liverpool boss. Other supporters are irate at the concept of bringing in a former leader of the club’s most hated rivals. Check out this video from a decade and a half ago, following a 0-0 Merseyside derby in February of 2007:

Jadon Sancho to Manchester United Finally a Done Deal

It occurred a year after it was supposed to, and we probably had about a thousand more transfer rumor stories than we really needed, but hey, the deal is finally, and I mean FINALLY done. Jadon Sancho is no longer a member of Borussia Dortmund, and his new team is Manchester United.

Or as I wrote on page 187 (back in February) of my just released book Transatlantic Passage: How the Premier League Redefined Soccer in America: “Jadon Sancho currently plays as a winger for Borussia Dortmund, but according to “reports,” he’s left BVB and joined Manchester United about 3,754 times and counting. Can’t wait until summer 2021, when he joins United again; maybe this time he’ll actually sign a contract and complete the transfer.”

Manchester City Got it Right by Extending Fernandinho Another Season

Manchester City recently announced that they had signed veteran midfielder Fernandinho to a new one-year deal. This is a good move on the part of City who are keeping hold of one of the most tactically astute players in the Premier League.

In a team that is filled with some of the best attackers in the world, it is the calming presence of the midfielder that acts as a guide. Leadership is one of Fernandinho’s best qualities and this was one of the reasons why he was made the club captain.

Nuno Espirito Santo Takes Tottenham Job, Spurs Manager Search Finally Ends

As per a report from Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are set to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager after Director of Football Fabio Paratici arrived in London to finish the deal.

Spurs let go of Jose Mourinho back in April and appointed Ryan Mason as their interim boss. Since then, they have been linked with many names, but none have come to fruition. There were suggestions that Nuno was being targeted by Turkish side Fenerbahce, but the Sky report states that it’s not true. The path for the north Londoners to appoint the former Wolves boss is crystal clear now.

Should Tottenham Sell Harry Kane? Time Might Be Right

In Tottenham’Hotspur world, there are two stories right now that are dominating their news cycle. The first is the search for a manager, which has been unsuccessful for quite a long time now. The second, and perhaps more important, is the future of Harry Kane. But should the England captain be sold?

It is clear to all that the striker is one of the best players in the Premier League. He is very much the heart and soul of the Spurs team and it’s been that way for quite a few years now. But at this stage of his career, the Englishman might be wanting a different kind of challenge and is looking for a move away.

Fernandinho Signs One Year Extension with Manchester City

When Manchester City signed Rodri from Atletico Madrid in 2019, it was a clear signal that the days for Fernandinho at the club were numbered. Well, you can restart the clock now, because Fernandinho, 36, has re-upped with the club for another season.

Tuesday saw the team formally announce the extended stay of the central, defensive midfielder (who can also fill in as an emergency centreback) and last month’s Champions League defeat provided much of the motivation for the Brazilian.

Harry Kane Must Wake Up for England, Says Sven Goran Eriksson

Sven Goran Eriksson, the former England manager, has told Ladbrokes that Harry Kane “needs to wake up” in order for his country to win Euro 2020.

The forward came into this tournament on the back of an outstanding season, topping the Premier League in both goals and assists. Though he hasn’t scored or assisted yet at this tournament, the Round of 16 clash against Germany would be the perfect time to do so.
