Fantasy Falling

Well, my fantasy baseball team’s stock continues to fall as I appear to be in a tailspin dropping to 39-45 on the season.  Injuries to my pitching staff, combined with inconsistent aces (Mark Buehrle, Justin Verlander, Joe Blanton) and closers who have imploded (Eric Gagne, Joe Borowski) have not helped, and my hitting has not been much better.  There is no worse feeling than a “fantasy baseball guru” offering advice when his team is tanking.  Alas, I would not be Soxman however, if I did not try to help.

Sizzler or Fizzler?

C.C. Sabathia
Depending on your league, C.C. Sabathia could be one of the most frequently moved players within the next two days.  AL only leagues will be dumping him faster than Paris Hilton dumps boyfriends.  NL only leagues will likely be bidding their remaining cap room on him.  In any league consider two key facts:  First, he’s been especially brilliant in his last few starts, posting a 1.80 ERA and 0.82 WHIP.  Second, he’ll be facing two of the best offenses in the NL (the Cubs and Phillies) several times down the stretch.

Sizzlers

Justin Verlander
Verlander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in his last five starts and should be a two-start pitcher this week.

JJ Hardy
.600, 6 HR, 12 RBI over the past 7 days puts him in position for the NL Player of the Week.

Matt Holiday
.429 batting average and 10 RBI in the last week highlight another great season for Holiday who is contributing across the board in fantasy leagues this season.

Cody Ross
Sleeper Alert!!!  A .500 BA, and 15 RBI in the past seven have contributed to Cody’s fairly solid numbers across the board on the season: .266 BA, 15 HR, 47 RBI, 4 SB.

Gavin Floyd
2 wins, a 2.02 ERA and 16Ks in his last two starts.

Roy Halladay
2 wins a 1.12 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP in his last two starts.

Rich Aurilia
Qualifies at 1B/2B/SS/3B in most leagues and has 2 HR with a .600 slugging percentage in his last 7 games.

Chris Duncan,
2 HR, 7 RBI, .368 OPS, .625 Slugging % in the past week.

Ryan Spilborghs
.435 BA, 2 HR, 6 RBI, SB, in his last 7 games.

Justin Duchscherer
He has allowed either one or two earned runs in each of his last seven outings

Fizzlers

Scott Rolen
Rolen should consider using “Ice, Ice, Baby” as his walk-up music in July with a batting average below .100, and no homers or RBI.

Joe Borowski
1-3 with a 7.56 ERA in 18 games this season are not numbers for any fantasy roster.  He may pick up with another team but his 2008 days as a closer are over.  It should be safe to drop him in all formats with the exception of the deepest of leagues.

Edgar Renteria
.038 BA, 0 RBI, O SB in the last week.

Kosuke Fukudome
.179 BA, 1 HR, .233 OBP, .286 SLG in his last 7 games.

Carlos Beltran
.192 BA, 11 Ks

Jeremy Hermida
.192 BA, 0 HR, 1 RBI

Good Bet Two Start Pitchers

C.C. Sabathia (Rockies and the Reds)
Justin Duchscherer  SEA (Silva); vs LAA (Saunders)
Matt Garza vs KC (Meche); CLE (Lee)
Scott Kazmir NYY (Ponson); CLE (TBD)
Manny Parra COL (Redman); vs CIN (Thompson)
