Reigning U.S. champion Gracie Gold is expected to make her Olympic debut tomorrow night in the ladies’ free skate for Team USA, with reigning world ice dance champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White expected in the free dance. It will air in prime time some time between 6-10 PM CST
Gracie Gold (born August 17, 1995) is an American figure skater from Springfield, Illinois. In addition to training in our state’s capital, she also worked out here in Chicago. So Gracie Gold is a local phenomenon, who’s about to go worldwide. She is the 2012 World Junior silver medalist, the 2014 U.S. national champion, and has been named to the U.S. team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
And here comes the obvious: someone named Gracie Gold in an Olympics? The media are going to bang us over the head with the most Captain Obvious of references for the next three weeks.
Remember, the stereotypical favorite winter olympic sport of women and gay men is figure skating. So it will get as much coverage in Sochi as gymnastics got in the summer games. Ice hockey is the stereotypical favorite winter olympic sport for men. I said stereotypically, I didn’t say for everyone. So due to the popularity of the ice sports, we’ll hear the Gracie Gold name storyline over and over again.
Gracie Gold is now based out of Los Angeles and beholden to Nike. Visa. United Airlines. COVERGIRL. P&G Family. Smucker’s. Pandora Jewelry. You can follow her on Twitter @GraceEGold. Gracie Gold can be found on Instagram @GracieGold95. And yes, we’re not doing any of the obvious Gracie Gold puns.
