Both Calvin Johnson and the Detroit Lions announced on January 6th that Johnson’s storied NFL career could be over. It appears that Megatron is processing all options, including retirement and that’s the way he’s likely going to go.

It’s sad that Calvin Johnson Rule is actually going to outlast Calvin Johnson.

If this news seemed a bit “out of nowhere,” when we first heard it, factor the money. Johnson has accomplished so much over the years. He’s set numerous records, and as such is compensated quite handsomely. He’s earned his pay, and he may just have become too expensive for the Lions in 2016.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport On Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson the Sunday after the season ended:

“The Lions we know are hiring a new general manager. On that to-do list, the number one item is what to do with Calvin Johnson? A $16 million salary, huge salary cap hit and from what I understand he is not going to play next year from the Lions organization perspective on that number. Would have to take a paycut to stay.”

“I’m shocked to see him walk away with so much future ahead of him. There must be another opportunity waiting for him on the other side in order for him to want to leave [with] another few years at a great level.” – Shaun O’Hara on Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson’s retirement declaration.
