Quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ “Shhhhhh” campaign continued as the Green Bay Packers beat the Rams 30-20 in front of a St. Louis crowd full of Cheeseheads.
Rodgers was near perfect while completing 30 of his 37 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Last season’s MVP has thrown 16 touchdowns in his last four games.
What It Means: The Packers are now 4-3 and it’s really hard to stop talking about Rodgers. On the season, he’s completing right around 70 percent (183/262) of his passes with 19 touchdowns compared to only four interceptions. No reason to think he’s not back in the discussion for another MVP award. Considering he’s done this against four of NFL’s top five defenses (Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and St. Louis) is impressive. As long as the defense can continue to play well despite a myriad of injuries, the Packers should be in the frontrunners for another divisional championship.
Player of the Game: WR Randall Cobb (8 catches for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns)
Cobb also had one rush for 19 yards. His versatility is the key to the Packers offense right now. With a sputtering running game and inconsistent offensive line, Cobb is the one guy who defenses have to question whenever on the field. The Green Bay coaching staff is doing a tremendous job when using the crafty second-year man out of Kentucky. Everyone talks about the Vikings’ Percy Harvin and Cobb could be on his way to becoming that kind of player.
Highlight of the Game: In the fourth quarter, Rodgers made the kind of throw that defines careers. While scrambling out of the pocket to his left side, he threw across his body with a beautiful spiral right into the Cobb’s hands for a 39 yard touchdown to give the Packers a commanding 27-13 play. There’s not many quarterbacks in the league that can make that kind of throw.
Stat of the Game (4): This represents the amount of interceptions on the season for Packers rookie Casey Hayward. With one of the Rams’ Sam Bradford, he has all four in the last three games. The second round draft pick out of Vanderbilt is a playmaker who’s currently seeing the field a lot more because of Sam Shield’s injury.
What’s Next: Green Bay finally gets to return home after playing three straight road games, all in domes. They will welcome in the woeful Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4, playing the Raiders this week). Fellow NFC Northerners the Bears and Vikings both have wins over the Jaguars.
