We wait in anticipation for it each season–like we wait for the first hot chocolate of each winter, like the first time Ted Thompson trades down in the annual NFL Draft, like the first beer after a week-long self-imposed ban because you overserved yourself last Saturday.
The Milwaukee Brewers are at Wrigley Field for their first series with the Chicago Cubs in 2010. Many things have changed for both teams, but the above remains the same. So click into the story, enjoy my video within, then create your own and send it to The SportsBank.net!
So far, we’re one game into this series and the Milwaukee Brewers have really not made it worth watching. Doug Davis is 2-0 on “rough starts” so far this season. (Not on wins.) He only lasted 3 and 1/3 innings Monday, he gave up six runs on seven hits, including a pair of homers in the 9-5 loss.
The Brewers’ pitching situation may not get any better at Wrigley, either. Dave Bush is slated for Wednesday and Jeff Suppan is to start on Thursday, after rehabbing on the 15-day DL for a sore neck.
What are the Brewers proud of in this series? Having two former Cubbies as strong starters. 3B Casey McGehee, the man who donned the Cubs ’09 Media Guide thanks to publisher error, was hot last season for the Crew and is hot again this season. He already has 9 hits, 4 runs, 2 homers, 4 RBI’s, 3 BB’s and a .346 average. His OBP his .414, too.
Jim Edmonds wasn’t even supposed to be a regular starter, yet he’s played five of seven games to start the Brewers’ season. He’s also batting fair and certainly not showing his age by any means just yet. Perhaps being relied upon by Milwaukee has rejuvenated his bat and glove.
If anything, I would have put money on Edmonds to start in the place of Corey Hart. However, Corey has found his bat and so he’s starting in RF, while Edmonds takes over for the 1-for-16 Carlos Gomez in CF.
We’ll see if the Cubs can continue to pound the bats after hitting just .197 in their first six games prior to their home opener on Monday against the Brewers. Be prepared for some regrouping by both teams on their off day, Tuesday. We’ll see how this most-enjoyable rivalry and their first season matchup plays out!
