Rivalry Week, Bracket Buster Week, now it’s Judgment WeekESPN is to creating exciting names for their college basketball coverage what Hallmark is to Valentine’s Day.  Still, it is a crucial time in the college basketball world with only two weeks left in the regular season and this past week was crazy as can be with seven top ten teams losing.

If you are unfamiliar with College Hoops 101, it is a weekly feature here at The Sports Bank that runs every Monday and breaks down everything you need to know going on in the world of college basketball.  I will look back at the previous week and peak ahead to some of the key match-ups in the next seven days.   Don’t forget to check out my latest bracketology.

SYRACUSE 63, West Virginia 52

Is there an uglier shot in college basketball than the Mountaineers’ Deniz Kilicli’s hook shot?  Is there an uglier player in college basketball than Kilicli?

KANSAS STATE 84, Kansas 68

The Jayhawks reign as #1 was shorter than Snooki.  This was the Jacob Pullen that most were expecting to see all season long.  I will just say this; K-State could be a very dangerous seven, eight, or nine seed come tourney time.

George Mason 71, VCU 51
Statement win on the road for the Patriots who are now in the NCAA Tournament even if they do not win the CAA Tournament.

St. John’s 80, MARQUETTE 68
I am fed up with MU.  The Johnnies just wanted this more and it showed in the second half when they erased an early seven-point deficit and ended the game on a 42-23 run.

OHIO STATE 71, Michigan State 61
Sparty gave a valiant effort but they are in trouble for their NCAA Tournament hopes.  There is the tiniest margin of error for them from here on out.

KENTUCKY 85, Mississippi State 79

ESPN’s primary camera for this game was attached to the speakers right below the scoreboard hanging over the court.  This angle sucks because you cannot see the entire half court and have no judgment when a shot is taken if it is on or not.  Plus, it kind of made me dizzy.

PURDUE 70, Wisconsin 62
It is baffling how good the Badgers shoot the ball at home but how off they are on the road.

TEXAS 73, Oklahoma State 55
Hear that?  That was Okie State’s bubble bursting.

VCU 68, WICHITA STATE 67
My condolences to the biggest (and only) Shox fan I know, Brian.  For the record, HUGE fan of Bracket Buster Week.  I am going to start making up names for weeks in my life just so they seem more important than they are.  ESPN does it.  Why can’t I?

LOUISVILLE 71, UConn 58
5-11 Peyton Siva had a 360 transition dunk… in the game.  It was rather impressive.

ST. JOHN’S 60, Pitt 59

MSG has its’ mecca-ness back in the college game.  The Johnnies have now beaten five top 13 teams (Pitt, Georgetown, Notre Dame, UConn, and Duke) on the best basketball stage of them all.

MARQUETTE 73, Seton Hall 64
After the St. John’s crapfest, I’m just happy the Golden Eagles won.

ARIZONA 87, Washington 86
Crazy game.  The refs sat on their whistles.  Zona was insanely careless with the basketball and played AWFUL help defense especially on pick and rolls.  Still, Derrick Williams made a pair of huge defensive plays in the final seconds as Zona keeps control of the drivers seat in the Pac-10 title race.

OLD DOMINION 74, Cleveland State 63
The Vikings scored 28 first half points.  Norris Cole had 24 of them.  This loss means Cleveland State needs to win their conference tournament to feel secure about being in the NCAA Tournament.

PURDUE 76, Ohio State 63

E’Twaun Moore went off with a career-high 38 points of 7-10 shooting from three.  Suddenly the Big Ten is an intriguing race with the Boilermakers now one game back of the Buckeyes.  Check out The Sports Bank’s Justin Mertes-Mistretta’s recap of this game.

WISCONSIN 76, Penn State 66
The Badgers don’t lose at home or drop back-to-back games.  They just don’t.  Penn State’s NCAA Tournament chances… THEY GONE!  Check out The Sports Bank’s Nick Grays rapid reaction for more on this game.

Utah State 75, ST. MARY’S 65
As if there was any debate, the Aggies are now in for sure even if they slip up in the WAC Tournament.  The Gaels have a crucial game against Gonzaga this weekend and will need to win that game to feel safe on Selection Sunday if they don’t claim the WCC Tourney title.

Fast Forward
Villanova at Syracuse, Mon 6:00, ESPN
Neither team is playing exceptionally well right now and could use a big win to catapult them down the stretch.

Illinois at Ohio State, Tues 6:00, ESPN
A loss drops Illinois to below .500 in conference and puts them firmly on the bubble with about five other Big Ten teams.

Morehead State at Murray State, Thur 8:00, ESPNU
Tied atop the Ohio Valley Conference, the winner likely claims the conference crown and at least a birth in the NIT.  Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried broke Tim Duncan’s modern-day NCAA rebounding record this past weekend and will likely be a first round pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

BYU at San Diego State, Sat 1:00, CBS
I love that this game is on national television so people all across the country can finally get a look at how good these two teams are.  Jimmer went off for 43 points when the Cougars beat the Aztecs earlier this season in Provo.

Syracuse at Georgetown, Sat 11:00, CBS
St. John’s at Villanova, Sat 1:30, ESPN
Arizona at UCLA, Sat 3:00, FSN
Florida at Kentucky, Sat 3:00, CBS

I may have to call in sick from work on Saturday.  Too many awesome games on.
