It was an extremely disappointing World Cup for Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min. Yes, he scored two of South Korea’s three goals at the tournament in Russia, but his side didn’t advance beyond the group stages. Sure, the South Koreans upset #1 Germany 2-0, and in the process eliminated the defending champions, but the Sweden’s win over Mexico eliminated them.
Then, on top of that, Son and his team were pelted with eggs by ungrateful idiots when they returned home to Seoul.
For Son Heung-min, the best way to move on from World Cup disappointment is to achieve glory on the club level, as Spurs are still looking for their first trophy under Mauricio Pochettino.
Son will have to wait a bit until he begins to do his part towards achieving that aim. The forward will have to miss the first month of Tottenham’s season due to South Korean law. That’s because he has not yet qualified for exemption from military service.
An explanation via Football 365:
Son would have to either reach the World Cup semi-finals or win the Asian Games in order to be exempt from the forced military service. He has therefore taken the decision to go to the tournament, which ends on September 1.
Son has confirmed to journalists that he has already spoken to Tottenham and cleared the decision.
Son won’t likely be available until mid-September, which means he could miss the league clashes against Newcastle United, Manchester United, Fulham and Watford.
