Manchester United outcast Victor Valdes was one of the more high profile names on the list of Premier League players who got released by their teams this offseason. The PL released the full set of names on June 11th. Nick Powell was the other recognizable Manchester United name on that list. Somewhat known names from other teams who weren’t offered new contracts included Arsenal trio Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Matheiu Flamini, as well as Kolo Toure and Stephane Sessegnon.
Victor Valdes is now on his way back to the Premiership.
The Spain international and former Barcelona shot-stopper has signed on with newly promoted club Middlesborough.
According to the BBC, “The 34-year-old, who has played 106 Champions League games, has signed on a two-year deal after being released by United in June. Valdes spent time on loan with Standard Liege last season.”
Valdes joined the Red Devils in January of 2015 (their only signing in the January window of 2015, they made no signings last January) and has made only two appearances for the club — making his debut as a substitute in the penultimate game of last season at home to Arsenal (1-1), and then starting the final match of 2014-15 away to Hull which ended in a goalless draw.
Said head coach Aitor Karanka to the club’s official website: “He knows how strong this group is. It’s a privilege for us to be able to bring a player like this to the club.”
