Manchester United central defender Eric Bailly has put aside his club’s rivalry with Liverpool to show support for embattled Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius. The Liverpool #1 had a disastrous showing in his side’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final this past weekend.
Games are decided, win or lose, by the team as a whole, but the German’s mistakes in this match certainly stood out among the other errors made in this match. On Sunday, Karius apologized to fans in a series of tweets:
Haven’t really slept until now… the scenes are still running through my head again and again… I'm infinitely sorry to my teammates, for you fans, and for all the staff. I know that I messed it up with the two mistakes and let you all down… pic.twitter.com/w9GixPiQDC

…As I said I'd just like to turn back the time but that's not possible. It's even worse as we all felt that we could have beaten Real Madrid and we were in the game for a long time…

…Thank you to our unbelievable fans who came to Kiev and held my back, even after the game. I don't take that for granted and once again it showed me what a big family we are. Thank you and we will come back stronger.

Since the game ended, the sleep deprived Karius has been receiving an extraordinary amount of online abuse, and some of it is has been so extreme that local police are investigating it. Bailly took the time to show some support for Loris on his official Instagram page. Karius posted the same apology on his IG account as well, and Bailly responded by commenting the following:
“Stay strong Loris, you are a good goalkeeper.”
