It hasn’t been a blockbuster summer transfer window for Manchester United, and the chances that it develops into one keep diminishing the closer we get to the start of the season. The team departs for their overseas preseason tour on Monday, and it remains to be seen how many more deals will actually get done before the window closes.
Old Trafford has already signed a pair, Swansea City winger Daniel James and Crystal Palace right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he expects just one or two more signings this summer. We’re not going to have a five or six new players kind of summer.
“Well, it’s a long-term and it’s a short-term project. You cannot just think three years down the line, so we’ve got short-term goals as well, of course,” Solskjaer said to an official outlet of the club.
“I think we’ve been quite calm and good in the market as we’ve got the right people, and we’re still working on a case or two. Of course, we’re always looking to improve the squad and, all over the summer, I’ve been in touch with Joel [Glazer] and Ed [Woodward] and all the recruitment people, and analysis people. I’ve got to say it’s been very good so far.”
“I’ve got the backing and we’ve got the people we wanted, for now, and there will probably be some more business being done.”
So with more business to be done, let’s quote 80s pop sensation Men at Work, and ask “who can it be now?” Click on the player’s name where highlighted for more on the current status of the respective transfer narrative.
-Still long overdue in trying to upgrade central defense, so there’s always going to be talk about Leicester City man Harry Maguire.
-Midfield still needs a lot of work, and Sporting Lisbon star man Bruno Fernandes has consistently remained linked with United this summer.
Although many media types believe the next signing will actually be Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff.
Finally, in attack, Sevilla’s Wissam Ben Yedder is on their radar.
