Really sad and stunning news to report here from Nairobi, Kenya. Local police there are reporting that Jimmy Macharia, aged 23, jumped to his death from the 7th floor of a building after learning that Manchester United lost at home to Newcastle United. It was the second Premier League home loss for the Red Devils in a span of four days and the first time New Castle has won at Old Trafford since 1972.
Watch the video after the jump for more on this tragedy. Obviously, many Manchester United fans are disturbed to learn of this suicide. This Kenyan literally gave his life because he couldn’t take the Manchester United loss.
According to Nairobi County police chief Benson Kibue, Mr. Macharia told his friends he could not stand and watch the team get beaten twice in a row before he jumped to his death. Police chief Benson Kibue told the media:
“All witness accounts suggest he committed suicide because the team lost but officers are still talking to those who were with him as part of the investigations into the incident. It is not the first time we are losing a young man because of the football in England, which is far away from us. They need to know that is just a game.”
