It continues to be a very exciting summer at Manchester United, with plenty of topics to discuss. What offseason, right?
So let’s take a spin through the latest news and notes items making the rounds on the internet today.
-United and Spain number 1 David de Gea is facing a lot of scrutiny right now. De Gea did not even register a save at this World Cup until the third game against Morocco. You can see why so many Spain fans want De Gea replaced. When every shot that was on target goes in, as they had, up until that point, the pitchforks will naturally be out.
Spain Interim Coach Fernando Hierro will not give in to the mob though, as he’s decided to stay the course in between the sticks for the knockout round. De Gea will be starting in goal for La Furia Roja against Russia.
“Yes, he will play,” Hierro responded when asked about the topic.
–Wayne Rooney is officially a member of D.C. United in Major League Soccer. He’ll play out the rest of the MLS season in the capital of the United States of America, and then, once his playing career is over, he’ll move on a coaching gig at Everton. Jose Mourinho weighs in on this news, and he backs Wazza to succeed in D.C.
“When he made it at Everton, his boyhood club, the world was surprised with that kid and then he went to Manchester United and he had the incredible career he had,” said Mourinho.
“Then in the Premier League again at Everton Football Club, so I think his career in England was perfect. He decides the MLS [is next] and in MLS, you have always some iconic players that are going to end their career there.
“You had [Steven] Gerrard, you had [Frank] Lampard, you had [Patrick] Vieira, you had so many of them. David Beckham played there too. You now have Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], you now have Wayne.”
“I just hope he enjoys it and, of course, he’ll bring the attention that the MLS needs to attract more people, to steal some people from the other sports that normally the American people are in love with.”
Uhm, Mr. Mourinho didn’t you leave out one major name there? One of your own players? Bastian Schweinsteiger who is now with the Chicago Fire?
-Finally, the two year contract extension for Marouane Fellaini was announced today, and many United fans are not happy about it. A lot of Red Devils supporters are really angry with Mourinho over this decision. As for Mourinho himself, the club released the following statement, attributing these quotes to the Portugese coach:
“I am very happy Marouane is staying with us. I always believed in his desire to stay with the club and I am delighted that he has signed a new contract.”
