With the splash signing of primary target Romelu Lukaku now complete, Manchester United shift gears to the next summer transfer window acquisition. They’ve checked off the defender (Victor Lindelof) and striker (Lukaku) boxes on their summer shopping list, with the focus now turning to holding midfielder.
According to multiple sources, Tottenham Hotspur‘s Eric Dier is the preferred next addition. Many of the tabloids are claiming the reason United Executive Vice President Ed Woodward is not joining the team on the preseason exhibition tour is because he’s working to close deals for Dier and Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic.
In years past, Woodward has joined the squad on these international tours, so this is a deviation from the norm. For more on the Perisic pursuit, go to this link. Getting back to the Tottenham Hotspur holding midfielder, acquiring the Spurs stalwart could be challenging as White Hart Lane has made it very clear they’re not interested in selling him.
However, Eric Dier grew up a Red Devils supporter and this could potentially be a dream move for him. Considering that Old Trafford could also double his wages, and it might be a situation that could come to fruition this summer. The Daily Express writes that: “It is understood Spurs value Dier in the £60m bracket, which is about £20m more than what United believe he’s worth.”
Mourinho is looking for a holding midfielder who can play back and allow Paul Pogba to push forward, his best and natural positioning. Mourinho’s former club, Chelsea, have what was United’s preferred target in Nemanja Matic, but that deal is most likely not going to happen now.
With United hijacking Chelsea’s bid for their number one transfer target, Lukaku, it doesn’t seem like they’ll be doing business with Old Trafford right now.
