The injury setback to Manchester United starting right back and team captain Antonio Valencia is not serious, but it has seemingly inspired a gloomy premonition in manager Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils boss said that United need to get to used to this kind of thing, as other injuries lay ahead this season.
“He’s injured,” Mourinho said to the club’s official web channel in regards to his skipper’s calf issues.
“We need to get used to it. Last season he was already in this kind of situation and probably this season we’re going to have more of that.”
Valencia could still be ready for the Premier League season opener against Leicester City, and his absence from future preseason friendlies is some what cautionary.
“It’s not a moment to take any risks. Antonio is a player that’s not a young boy anymore. We have to take care of him and to try to have him ready for the start of the season.”
Valencia, a 32-year-old Ecuadoran international, limped off very early in United’s goalless draw against the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, but he did say after the game that he was fine.
United are set to face AC Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid in the United States in friendly matches as part of the International Champions Cup.
