Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is having a nightmarish preseason, and he continues to publicly express his frustrations with anything and everything that has gone wrong this summer.
Mourinho was forced to tour the United States with a very young side, featuring a lot of players that will not be in the actual regular season squad. Most of his star players are still not back from post World Cup vacations. The injury bug is starting to bite too, as the unavailable list piles up.
On top of all that, the summer transfer window is not working out too well for Mourinho and his club. It’s been a really quiet window at United, and there are only 11 days left for it to get noisier. Mourinho expressed his concerns that he’ll only get one more player this summer, and reiterated his previously stated desire to acquire two.
“I would like to have two more players,” Mourinho said at a press conference yesterday in Michigan.
“I think I am not going to have two. I think [it] is possible I am going to have one. It is possible, and that one I gave a list to my club five names a few months ago, and I wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players.
“If it’s possible, it’s possible. If it’s not, it’s not. If it’s possible, good. If it is not possible, we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have.”
Although it was just a friendly, and Mourinho was without most of his key players, the 4-1 loss to arch-rival Liverpool was just plain ugly to watch. The Red Devils were dominated, as expected with Liverpool able to feature more of their star players.
Typically, Mourinho likes to get his transfer business done early in the window, and with deadline day coming 22 days earlier than usual this summer, the pressure is really on.
One of the two desired acquisitions is widely reported to be a central defender, with England breakout star Harry Maguire and Spurs man Toby Alderweireld at the top of the wish list.
