A week before the World Cup started we looked at who Americans should adopt for this tournament, given how our own national side couldn’t be bothered enough to qualify. Specifically, we tossed out the ideas of supporting England or Mexico, and then realized supporting Mexico would be a terrible idea.
Seeing how poorly Landon Donovan’s #VamosMexico campaign has gone (who could have seen that coming, it’s not like we already knew how dull and flat Donovan is on camera), we were right in saying that Three Lions was the proper choice.
A new web video, in which Late Late Show host James Corden leads six Three Lions players in a campaign to recruit American fans to support England in the World Cup, verifies this idea.
Corden enlists the help of Harry Kane, Dele, Jamie Vardy, Jesse Lingard, Kyle Walker and Eric Dier, and the results are quite humorous. (Or should we say “humourous”)
However, it’s Jesse Lingard who truly steals the show, with his notable dance moves (did you expect anything less) and comedic timing.
Have a watch below:
“We live 50 United States- New York, California, (slight pause) Texas, (longer pause) Vegas, (more pauses) Chicago, Gotham,” Lingard says with hilarity. The Manchester United winger’s direct, heartfelt emotional plea towards the end really stands out.
Today saw Lingard score his first ever World Cup goal, and Kane bag a hat trick in a 6-1 rout of Panama. It was the first time England had scored more than four goals in a World Cup match, and it clinched their passage through to the knockout round.
