Gareth Southgate Answers Jose Mourinho Over Phil Jones Controversy

England Manager Gareth Southgate has responded to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho in the club versus country row over defender Phil Jones. Southgate stands by the England National Team’s medical staff, and their decisions in treating Jones.

In the mid-November international friendly against Germany, Jones received six injections, claims Mourinho, before the center back limped off, and out of the game. The Red Devils boss launched into a major tirade against the England Football Association on November 18, and his relationship with Three Lions Manager Gareth Southgate has never been worse.

Mourinho gave an epic rant at his weekly news conference that Friday.

Southgate has responded, by saying: “I have every trust in our medical team that they make the right calls. They are very experienced people and this is an unfortunate situation and we hope Phil is back playing as soon as he can be.”

“I have massive empathy with Jose. As a manager you don’t want to lose players to injury. For me, as the national coach, that’s the worst scenario when a player goes back to his club and is not able to play.”

“We have got ongoing dialogue over this situation,” Southgate continued. “It is a complex one and we want to make sure we get these things right.”
