Manchester United had a much better kickoff game this season than they did last year. Manager Louis Van Gaal accomplished a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur today, his 64th birthday. Last year began with an uninspiring goalless draw with very lowly Burnley.

Van Gaal gave a very compelling post-game interview; like he often does. The video is embedded below:

-Time for your daily David de Gea update. It’s a a never ending soap opera like Arturo Vidal was last summer. Will he stay at Manchester United, or move to Real Madrid? Nothing is official yet of course, but here’s the latest headlines on the situation:

(BBC Sport) Van Gaal on De Gea’s future at Manchester United: “I’m not the most important part with De Gea. The most important part is the player and the club who wants to buy him. He’s our best player for the past two or three years so we cannot let him go so easily. We want to sell at the same level as we pay. We want to keep him of course.”

He was then pressed about the contract negotiations. Van Gaal was asked about Real Madrid’s bidding process, and if they were not meeting Old Trafford’s price. Van Gaal said he couldn’t comment on that because he can’t interfere on the process and then added “it’s none of your business.”

The reporter responded with “fair enough.” The exchange was certainly not as contentious as this surly, condescending post match interview Van Gaal gave last season. In another post match interview today, Van Gaal was asked flat out if we will ever see De Gea in a red United shirt again, and if so, when.

Van Gaal simply said in that interview today that he didn’t know.
